May 12th is the International Awareness Day for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), and Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND).

May 12th is also Florence Nightingale's birthday. This day was chosen to raise awareness of these conditions because she suffered from ME/CFS from her 30s.

On our blog we have resources and tools to help manage the symptoms of ME/CFS and other fatigue conditions: https://reclaimphysio.com.au/the-art-of-pacing-managing-chronic-fatigue-without-burnout/

🌿 Living with chronic illness is exhausting in ways that go beyond physical fatigue.

It’s important to remember that rest isn’t just about sleep. There are 5 types of rest
— physical, mental, emotional, sensory, and social, — that all play a role in helping you heal and feel more balanced.

Chronic illness can leave you feeling depleted on many levels, and honoring the kind of rest your body and mind truly need can make a big difference in your well-being. Give yourself permission to rest in ways that feel nourishing.

Four Ways To Be More Mindful

At Reclaim, we are often exploring mindfulness and mindful principles with our clients with invisible illness. Mindfulness can play an important role in managing pain, fatigue, long covid and conditions like POTS and HSD. Mindfulness is best when it is individualized and when the practice suits your lifestyle.

Mindfulness can help by:

🧡Reducing the emotional distress associated with chronic pain. Mindfulness encourages you to observe pain without judgement or resistance. This can help reduce the impact of pain in the moment.

🧡Helping to listen to your body's signals. By practicing mindful awareness, you can notice the early signs of fatigue and implement restorative rest. Mindfulness can also be a form of restorative rest.

🧡Regulating the autonomic nervous system. Mindfulness can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest system) which can calm the body's stress response. This can reduce symptoms of POTS, fatigue and pain.

🧡Reducing stress and anxiety which is common when living with unpredictable invisible illness. Mindfulness can help by grounding you in the present which can lead to improvements in how your body copes with physical symptoms.

🧡Improving sleep quality to optimise healing and energy restoration.
