Happy Holidays.

Thank you for all the support I have received for my little business, I’m so grateful for the connection, friendships and cheerleaders this business has brought me.
I’m taking a much needed break and slowing down to enjoy the holiday season with my family.
I’ll also be taking more time in 2022 to balance life with an energetic toddler and other exciting work commitments.

Enjoy what matters to you in what feels like a weird and uncertain time.
Thank you for supporting me and Little Seed 🤍🌿

•CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS•
If you’re on your last legs of Christmas shopping- or just starting… it’s always important to think about what purpose those toys or play equipment will have.
The holidays can be super overwhelming with the sheer amount of toys and ‘things,’ while all having wonderful intentions. Some of these toys are incredibly creative, spark curiosity and are engaging, and as we know play is absolutely critical in child development. However, spending time with our Littles engaging and supporting in play is just as special a gift.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Supports development of intonation, rhythm and speech patterns by allowing Littles to experiment with sound, songs and music. Instruments also help develop gross and fine motor skills as well as hand eye coordination. Language opportunities include: new vocabulary (loud, soft, hit, shake, up, down), concepts (on, in, under, next to) and following directions

BALLS
Support spatial awareness, grasping skills and problem solving. Balls are a great tool for turn taking and helps support our smallest Littles begin developing shared attention to a task with an adult. Balls are also great vocabulary builders especially for action words/verbs (throw, bounce, chuck, roll), requesting and following directions

BOARD GAMES
Great tool to support emotional development through emotion recognition, persistence, patience and team work. Board games are also a great stepping stone for learning to follow rules, take turns and share space with others. As Littles grow, board games are wonderful at boosting their planning, organising and problem solving skills.

1. PUZZLES
Wonderful tools for building fine motor skills, problem solving and hand eye coordination. My favourite thing about puzzles is how much they help build Littles confidence and perseverance with tasks. Language opportunities include: new vocabulary (animals, shapes, colours, sizes), concepts (on, in, under, next to) and following directions

2. PLAYDOUGH
An absolute go to sensory tool. Great as a way to support calming and regulating the body, fine motor skills and letter and shape knowledge. Playdough is also a fabulous way to foster Creativity and imagination.

3. MR POTATO HEAD
Language opportunities include: requesting, use and knowledge of body parts, action words and positioning. Me Potato Head also helps build symbolic play.

What’s your favourite thing to make with playdough? Tell me below!

I’m going to share some gift ideas over the next few days that are not only fun, are great to use together, and also support Littles communication and play skills.

1. LIFT THE FLAP THE BOOKS
We all know my love for books, anyone who receives a gift from us always expect a book of some description. I especially love lift the flap books as they encourage Littles of all ages to be actively involved in shared book reading and give Littles a level of control they crave by being in charge of lifting the flap each time.
Lift the flaps can range from simple hide and seek style books through to word and picture matching for older Littles. The flaps also support early concepts of up/down, under/in front, on/in etc.

What are your fave Lift the Flap Books? Let me know below!

• Toy Series •

While some of the best play happens organically and without toys specifically marketed for children, it is still important to think about the skills and experiences different types of toys and play can bring about.
Using toys that are found in most household I am going to breakdown some of the skills these props can help develop and grow in our Littles.
Remember a toy can be made from anything!

At the moment we are in a big animal phase, whether it is stuffed toys or figurines they’ve been great at supporting Little 18 months in her symbolic sound development, imagination and understanding of what the world around her. They’ve also been helpful in starting to support Big Feeling development and regulation which is so helpful for all of us.

What’s your favourite prop or toy for play?

💬 Finding Language in Daily Routines. 💬

Daily routines are so important not only because they provide babies and toddlers with structure and predictability in their day, but we know that littles learn from doing the same things over and over again.

It might be quicker to quickly do the washing while your little has their nap, but it can also be a great bonding experience that also promotes independence and life skill development. Hanging out the washing can be mundane and boring but adding a little helper can make it more enjoyable for everyone.

Breaking routines or tasks into small steps make them easier to understand and provides more moments for success. Being flexible and creative means routines can be made out of anything!

📖 Welcome to WAWR. Books and shared reading time is the perfect way to introduce life long language skills. 📖

This week I’m sharing something different on its launch day!
The Coal Coast Baby Magazine is a fantastic resource launched by to share and support local businesses who provide services in the prenatal, birth, mama support, baby and toddler space.

While my books are currently closed I’m still incredibly excited to share space with some brilliant people and services that I have previously accessed and continue to use in my motherhood journey.

If you’d like a copy please let me know and I’ll do my best to get one to you or let you know where in the Illawarra you might find one.

📖 Welcome to WAWR 📖

This week I am sharing the 2021 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Award Winners.

BIRTH TO THREE YEARS
- Look, Baby by Janeen Brian -

Using a very cute cut-out design, this book takes a baby on an adventure to look at different places and objects together with their family. The characters and environments are relatable and help parents to talk about the world around them with their Little. It incorporates repetition and rhyme and helps build suspense and prediction about what is going to happen next.

THREE TO FIVE YEARS
-Boo Loves Books by Kaye Baillie-

This is a very sweet story about Phoebe who is worried about reading. I love that the story provides the opportunity to discuss complex feelings, making mistakes and overcoming fears which are all incredibly relevant to this age group.

FIVE TO EIGHT YEARS
-The Thing that Goes Ping! by Mark Carthew-

This story follows a wonderful rhyme pattern to help children develop their confidence and knowledge of rhyme. The story follows the town as they find the thing that goes ping and meet a variety of fun animals on the way.

EIGHT TO TEN YEARS
-Bindi by Kirli Saunders-

Bindi explores bushfires and the feelings that can be associated with this, and the healing that occurs afterwards. It is written from the perspective of a child within this age group that helps children relate to thoughts and feelings Bindi may have and the inclusion of Gundunurra language throughout the text incorporates First Nations culture.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER AUTHORED CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARD
-is this your egg? By Ella Kris-

This beautiful book follows the journey of Henry the hermit crab to answer the question of ‘is this your egg?’ Using Meriam Mer language of the Torres Strait, emphasises First Nations culture. The illustrations show each animal in their natural habitat which can illicit discussions about each animal and their world.

An amazing range of books for all young readers and worthy winners of each category. What are you reading this week?

💬 Finding Language in Daily Routines. 💬

Daily routines are so important not only because they provide babies and toddlers with structure and predictability in their day, but we know that littles learn from doing the same things over and over again.

It might be faster to quickly do the washing while your little has their nap, but it can also be a great bonding experience that also promotes independence and life skill development. Slowing down and spending time filling the washing machine together can make it more enjoyable for everyone.

Breaking routines or tasks into small steps make them easier to understand and provides more moments for success. Being flexible and creative means routines can be made out of anything!
