🌟 May is Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Month 🌟
This May, let's unite to raise awareness and support for those living with Neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic condition that affects 1 in 2,000 Australians. Despite its prevalence, only 6% of Australians have heard of it. It's time to bring NF out of the shadows. 💙💚
🧠 What is NF?
NF is a group of complex genetic conditions that cause tumours to form on nerves throughout the body. The impacts are diverse—some face hearing or vision loss, others experience bone abnormalities and visible tumours. Many face learning difficulties and chronic pain. Without the right support, they are forced to face an unfair reality alone.
📊 The Stats:
1 in 5 children with NF1 will develop a brain tumour.
Women with NF1 are five times more likely to develop breast cancer before age 50.
On average, lives are shortened by 10–15 years.
Rates of depression (28%) and anxiety (17%) are much higher in the NF community than in the general population averages of 11.7% and 8.2% respectively.
