Treating pigmentation in darker skin types requires a gentler, more barrier-focused approach.

Generic laser protocols designed for lighter skin can overheat melanin-rich skin, triggering inflammation and worsening post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation rather than resolving it.

For these skin types, I prioritise medical-grade home care that regulates inflammation and strengthens barrier function. Device intervention is used sparingly and only when the skin is prepared.

When appropriate, I may use Q-switched laser for targeted pigment fragmentation, or occasionally superficial UltraClear Clear+ for very specific presentations. The key is never to compromise skin integrity in pursuit of pigment clearance.

Pigmentation management in darker skin types always begins with thorough assessment, including Wood's lamp evaluation to determine pigment depth and guide treatment selection.

Lower face rejuvenation is no longer about adding volume.

Instead, it’s about restoring skin quality and structural support.

Changes in the lower face are often driven by collagen loss and reduced tissue integrity rather than a simple absence of fullness.

When these processes aren’t addressed, volume alone can lead to heaviness without true improvement in skin behaviour.

Laser coring techniques like Ultraclear allow for targeted stimulation of collagen and dermal remodelling. This often forms the foundation of treatment in the lower face.

From there, mindful, subtle contouring with biostimulators can be introduced to support gradual, biologically driven improvement at a structural level over time.

Modern aesthetic outcomes are defined less by “anti-ageing” and more by supporting skin to perform well at every stage.

If this approach resonates with you, DM the word CONSULT to arrange a personalised assessment with Dr Grant.

Neck ageing is rarely a single-layer issue.

Skin quality and structural support all change at different rates in life, which is why single-modality treatments often underperform in this area.

Technologies such as Ultraformer target deeper structural support, while 3D Miracl works at a different tissue depth to support collagen stimulation and skin quality.

When used together, these modalities address distinct layers rather than attempting to force one device to do everything.

Combination doesn't mean aggressive. When planned correctly, it means precise.

Treatment planning matters more than intensity at Thrive Skin Clinic. DM us the word CONSULT to arrange a personalised assessment with Dr Grant.

Sun damage and rosacea-prone skin often coexist, but they require a careful, inflammation-aware approach.

Visible redness and uneven tone are commonly driven by cumulative UV exposure layered over chronic inflammation and a compromised skin barrier. In this context, treatment choice matters more than ever, and not all energy-based devices are appropriate.

For this skin profile, we often use Laser Genesis combined with a medium-depth peel, chosen specifically for their ability to address deep inflammation, support barrier repair, and deliver nutrients without triggering reactive flare-ups.

Rather than targeting pigment or vessels aggressively, this layered approach works by calming inflammatory pathways and supporting collagen remodelling, making it particularly suitable for reactive or rosacea-prone skin.

When sun damage and inflammation intersect, precision and restraint remain central to our mission.

If you're navigating redness or sun damage, DM the word CONSULT to arrange a personalised assessment with Dr Grant.

Ablative laser outcomes are determined long before the laser is switched on.

Skin preparation can play a critical role in how effectively tissue responds and remodels after treatment, yet it’s often overlooked in favour of focusing solely on treatment intensity.

This is where BioRePeel can be clinically valuable. Used appropriately, it may support epidermal renewal, improve cellular turnover and help optimise barrier function before ablative treatments.

When preparation is done correctly, combination approaches are not aggressive; they’re strategic.

If you’re considering laser treatment, understanding why each step exists matters. Education-led care begins with assessment and informed decision-making, not escalation.

DM the word CONSULT for a considered review of your skin and preparation plan.

In modern skin care, more is often marketed as better.

More steps. More actives. More devices. But skin doesn’t respond to volume. It responds to considered selection.

Automated routines and trend-led regimens assume all skin behaves the same. In reality, skin goals differ and tolerance changes over time. What improves one person’s skin can quietly compromise another’s.

Progress comes from understanding what the skin is trying to achieve: repair, regulation, stimulation, or protection, and choosing interventions that support that goal without overwhelming the system.

"Correct" doesn’t start with a product or a protocol. It starts with an assessment. DM our team with the word CONSULT to arrange your appointment with Dr Grant this autumn.

In skin care, the phrase "gold standard" is often used as shorthand for strongest.

But strongest doesn't always mean the most appropriate.

Prescription retinoids like tretinoin are an excellent example. When used in the right context, they can be highly effective, particularly for thicker, sebaceous skin and ageing male skin, where tolerance is often higher, and barrier resilience is stronger.

However, these same formulations are typically unsuitable for perimenopausal and post-menopausal skin. During perimenopause, the skin barrier is already compromised due to declining oestrogen. Adding a high-strength retinoid often triggers inflammation, delayed recovery, and worsening sensitivity. In these cases, "pushing through" irritation rarely leads to better outcomes.

This is exactly why treatment decisions should never be based on trends or blanket recommendations. They should be based on individual skin type and life stage.

For many patients, cosmeceutical retinols formulated to deliver active vitamin A without causing inflammation are a more appropriate choice. These formulations allow you to build tolerance gradually, support your barrier first, and increase strength over time as your skin adapts.

Thrive's goal isn't to use the strongest option available. It's to choose the option your skin can sustain.

Assessment-led decision making matters. If you'd like a personalised assessment of your skin type and tolerance, DM the word CONSULT to book a consultation.

Let's talk about the conversation most aesthetic practitioners want to avoid.

The term "concern" is often loosely thrown around, but for Australian skin, what we're really seeing is cumulative sun damage.

In our climate, this context matters. Australia has one of the highest rates of photoageing and skin cancer in the world, which means any conversation about skin quality must begin with prevention and long-term repair.

Pigment irregularities, visible vessels and textural change are rarely isolated aesthetic issues. They're biological responses to years of UV exposure, often beginning long before patients realise damage is occurring.

Daily SPF remains the obvious foundation. A regular skin check with a qualified skin cancer doctor is essential. Beyond that, technologies such as IPL and ablative lasers can play an important role when used thoughtfully.

The key is understanding what your skin needs, and when. Not every patient requires aggressive intervention, and not every change needs to be treated immediately. Precision and clinical expertise are what determine truly sustainable outcomes.

If you'd like a considered medical evaluation of your skin, send us a DM with the word CONSULT today.

Sun damage isn’t addressed with a single product or procedure.

In reality, it can be managed with thoughtful prevention and care, both in and out of clinic.

Daily SPF is an essential. It doesn’t reverse damage, but it prevents further UV-induced injury, which is why every effective repair plan begins here.

Topical actives also have a role to play. Vitamin A can support cell turnover and collagen regulation. Vitamins B and C support barrier repair and help mitigate oxidative stress.

When used correctly, they prepare the skin to respond more effectively to in-clinic treatments. Synergie's Dermiotic and ÜberZinc, for example, can assist with barrier and microbiome support, particularly for sun-damaged or post-treatment skin.

From there, devices are chosen based on what the skin is showing. IPL can address pigment and vascular changes associated with chronic sun exposure, whereas ablative lasers may be appropriate for more advanced photodamage.

What matters most isn’t doing everything, it’s doing the right thing, in the right order, for your skin.

If you’re unsure what your skin actually needs, send us a DM with the word CONSULT to book your consultation with Dr Grant.

Not all skincare does the same job, so it’s worth clarifying the difference.

Some products are created to change skin. These act like topical nutrition, delivering ingredients that have strong peer-reviewed evidence for improving skin function and structure over time.

Vitamins A, B, and C, along with SPF and exfoliants, can stimulate collagen, regulate pigment, support DNA repair, and protect against ongoing damage.

Other products exist to support the skin. Cleansers, moisturisers, and barrier-repair products are focused on comfort and hydration, but they don’t actively remodel skin biology. They are, however, essential foundations, particularly when the skin barrier is compromised.

This distinction matters most for sensitive or barrier-impaired skin. In these cases, active products can worsen inflammation and reactivity. The priority instead becomes barrier repair and restoring balance. As skin health improves, actives can then be reintroduced gradually and strategically.

Modern skincare trends often champion maximalist routines, but Dr Grant and the Thrive team take a more considered approach.

Our in-person assessments offer far more than big brand names or trending routines. The right products depend on your skin biology, not the label on the bottle.

If skincare has never quite worked for you, a consultation can help clarify why. DM the word “Consult” to book.

Collagen stimulation works best when it's part of a plan, not a one-off fix.

Your skin is a living, changing organ. Ageing, oxidation, hormonal shifts... They're happening continuously. A single treatment might give you a short-term boost, but it won't address what's happening beneath the surface over time.

That's why I approach treatments like 3D Miracl™ as regular skin health support. Heat-based collagen stimulation with minimal downtime, well-tolerated, and no local anaesthetic needed. It's particularly valuable for perimenopausal skin, where oestrogen decline affects collagen quality.

Sometimes I recommend 3D Miracl™ to prepare your skin before more intensive treatments. Other times it's used to maintain results. Either way, it's about supporting your skin's biology consistently.

This is what I mean by prejuvenation. Stimulating collagen prospectively, at any age, to support the skin you want to maintain. Not chasing dramatic change, just investing in skin quality over time.

A good consultation includes discussing the initial plan, what we do to prepare your skin, and how we'll maintain it. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Healthy skin outcomes don’t begin, or end, in our treatment rooms.

Skin health is closely linked to sleep quality, nervous system regulation and stress levels. When cortisol levels remain elevated, inflammation increases, meaning even the best in-clinic treatments can struggle to deliver their full benefit.

Holistic support forms the foundation of our care at Thrive Skin Clinic. Conversations with patients will often include sleep hygiene, stress management, and daily supplements such as magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D, which have evidence supporting their role in overall skin health.

Gut health is another important piece of the puzzle. Increased inflammation or digestive imbalance can present through the skin, particularly in conditions like acne and rosacea.

This isn’t about doing everything at once or following the latest wellness trends. It’s personalised, evidence-based care designed to work alongside clinical treatments, not replace them.

Explore your personal skin health further in a bespoke assessment with Dr Grant by sending us a DM with the word “Consult.”
