Last Saturday I had the privilege of being invited by the Australian Orthopaedic Association to be an interviewer at the Orthopaedic Surgery Interviews. It was an absolute pleasure to be involved in what was an extensive day of over 100 candidate interviews over an 8 hour period.

Fantastic to speak to the likes of Dr Quang Do and Dr Anna Watson (both pictured here).

It is always rewarding as a medical professional to see how corrective procedures can improve a patient's quality of life. I recently treated a patient with a congenital hyperextension deformity of the fifth toe. We significantly improved the visual appearance of the affected toe by combining Z-plasty of the skin and Z-lengthening of the extensor tendon.

We had a exciting day in the operating room as we encountered a variety of cases, including a Chronic Achilles Rupture. I was joined by our podiatrist Stefan from the UK who is observing and Lyo my assistant.

Meet Lyo,

Lyo is a GP who moonlights a couple of days a week, assisting surgeons in theatre. She sets up the patient, holds the retractors to allow visualisation, and helps to close the wound.

Our team had an incredible experience learning ultrasound guided foot and ankle injection at UOW cadaver lab. So grateful for the opportunity to train in such a fantastic facility.

One of the advantages of working in a multidisciplinary centre is having members of our team join us in theatre. It aids understanding when you can witness the surgical journey from start to finish. An absolute pleasure to help here. Pro cyclist came in to see Dr Meghan Dares with a suspected elbow fracture. After consultation and a CT reviewed by Dr Dares she was cleared to race…and went on to win the women’s final!! Congrats from everyone at the WFAC, Annemiek. Glad we could help 👏👏👏

Our centre is an award winning multi-disciplinary facility with orthopaedic surgery, podiatry, ultrasound, Xray and rehabilitation all on-site. As a result of our growth, we are expanding our allied health division to also include physiotherapy and exercise physiology (in addition to podiatry).
