What Breast Reduction Surgery May Achieve

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that aims to reduce breast volume and reshape the breasts to better align with an individual’s anatomy. Patients who seek consultation often do so for a range of physical and practical reasons, however outcomes vary and suitability must be assessed on an individual basis.

Depending on a patient’s anatomy, symptoms and desired outcome, breast reduction surgery may achieve:

- A reduction in breast volume and weight

- A lifted breast and ni**le position

- Create proportional balance between the breasts and the torso

- Relief of symptoms related to breast size, such as physical discomfort or skin irritation

- Improved ease with daily activities and exercise

- Breast shape

During a consultation, Dr Starr carefully assesses anatomy, skin quality, breast tissue, and overall health to determine whether breast reduction surgery is appropriate and to discuss realistic surgical outcomes, risks, and recovery.

Recovery Considerations After Combined Breast and Body Procedures

When breast and body procedures are performed together, recovery considerations differ from single-procedure surgery and require a more structured post-operative approach. A combined breast and body procedure will typically take between 6 and 10 hours to complete.

From a clinical perspective, combined procedures involve:
• Multiple surgical sites
• Longer operative time
• A broader focus on wound care, mobility, and activity limitations while recovering

Patients will likely require:
• Good preoperative health
• A longer initial recovery period
• Additional support at home during the early post-operative phase
• Careful adherence to movement and lifting restrictions
• Regular follow-up to monitor healing across all surgical areas

Pain management, positioning, compression garment use, scar therapy and gradual return to activity are all discussed in detail as part of the pre-operative planning process. Importantly, recovery timelines can vary depending on individual health factors, surgical extent, and how the body heals.

21/01/2026

Recovery after a DIEP flap breast reconstruction involves time, patience, and careful attention to post-operative instructions. Full recovery from DIEP surgery can typically take 2-3 months. Friends and family can play an important role in supporting patients safely and comfortably during this period.

Practical ways to help include:

- Assisting with daily tasks: Preparing meals, bringing water or snacks, and helping with simple household chores can prevent the patient from overexerting themselves

- Mobility support: Encouraging safe movements, helping with walking if needed, and ensuring the patient avoids bending, lifting, or twisting that could strain the abdominal donor site

- Managing hospital and home requirements: Supporting the patient with dressings, compression garments, or medications as instructed by Dr Starr and our nursing team

- Creating a comfortable environment: Ensuring rest areas are set up with pillows for support, easy access to essentials, and minimal obstacles for safe movement

- Providing emotional support: Recovery can be physically and emotionally demanding. Offering patience, encouragement, and understanding contributes positively to overall well-being

- Planning leave from work: Patients undergoing DIEP Breast Reconstruction will usually require 3-6 weeks away from work to rest and recover. Planning this time with a partner or friend and an employer will help reduce stress.

Your Surgical Consultation Explained
A consultation is a key part of the surgical planning process and allows the surgeon to assess suitability for your chosen procedure. During this appointment, several factors are reviewed, including:
Medical history and current medications

Previous surgeries or procedures

Lifestyle factors that may affect healing, such as smoking

Anatomical assessment relevant to the procedure

Discussion of expected recovery, post-operative care, and potential risks

The consultation also provides an opportunity for patients to get to know Dr Starr, ask questions, and gain a clear understanding of the procedure. This helps ensure that patients feel informed, supported, and comfortable with any decisions regarding their care.
A personalised consultation ensures that any procedure recommended is clinically appropriate and tailored to the patient’s individual needs. It does not automatically mean surgery will proceed; it is an opportunity to fully assess suitability, review options, and make informed decisions in collaboration with your surgical team.

Understanding Upper Eyelid Skin Laxity

Upper eyelid skin changes naturally over time, sometimes resulting in loose or sagging skin along the eyelid crease. These changes can occur due to aging or genetics and may cause folds of skin that rest over the eyelid.

Blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid surgery, can address excess skin and underlying fat tissue to support a smoother eyelid contour. The procedure is tailored to each individual’s anatomy and skin condition.

Not all patients with eyelid laxity are a suitable candidate. Suitability is assessed during a consultation with Dr Starr, taking into account skin quality, eyelid anatomy, overall health, and any medical conditions that could affect healing. Individuals who are fit and healthy, with significant skin laxity on the upper eyelid, may be considered for surgery. Factors such as smoking, pre-existing medical conditions, or previous eyelid procedures may affect candidacy.

A personalised consultation with Dr Starr is required to determine whether upper eyelid surgery is appropriate, and to develop a safe, clinically-informed treatment plan.
