Care pathways that wrap around families ❤️

Connected care matters when families need it most.

And this rings especially true for one of our own.

In December, our Leongatha Memorial Hospital Comms team member, Marlo, began maternity leave earlier than planned, due to a high-risk pregnancy.

On 2 January, Marlo welcomed her daughter, Bailee Rae, who arrived at 33 weeks via an emergency C-section.

The blurry early days can feel overwhelming for any family. And being close to home can make a real difference.

Bailee was transferred to the new Peninsula University Hospital, allowing Marlo and her family to commute between home and hospital more easily while Bailee continues to receive the specialised care she needs.

For Marlo, this second pregnancy journey wasn’t just about systems working as designed.

It was about feeling supported as both a parent and a colleague.

For our wider Bayside Health family, Marlo’s story is a reminder that the pathways we build are deeply human.

They are there for our communities.

They are also there for our people.

Across Bayside Health, teams work together every day to ensure care is coordinated, compassionate, and centred on families.

This moment reflects that shared commitment in action.

We are holding Marlo and her family of four in our thoughts as little Bailee continues her care journey with Bayside Health.

LEONGATHA | Supporting heart care close to home

The strength of local healthcare is built through community support, and in Leongatha that support continues to make a real difference.

Thanks to funds raised through the Lions Christmas Cake Project, Lions Leongatha has donated two new portable defibrillators to Leongatha Memorial Hospital.

These portable defibrillators extend cardiac emergency support beyond the main hospital building. They can now be used at health service community events and within specialist cardiac services, helping medical staff respond faster to cardiac arrest wherever care is being delivered.

This donation reflects a community that looks after its own, strengthening local care and helping ensure vital support is available when it’s needed most.

Lions Leongatha continues to welcome new members who would like to be actively involved in giving back to the community they call home. Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to email leongathalionsclub@hotmail.com or visit the Lions Clubs Australia website.

LEONGATHA - Care access update
We have been made aware that the Leongatha Healthcare Group general practice clinic has closed. We understand this news may be unsettling for our community.
While the clinic is not part of our health service and we do not have further information about its closure or future arrangements, we want to reassure the community that Leongatha Memorial Hospital remains fully open and all hospital services are continuing as normal.
Maternity, urgent care, and surgical services at Leongatha Memorial Hospital are operating as usual, with additional staffing in place to meet community needs.
Our Midwives and General Practitioner Obstetricians — the doctors you already know and see at Leongatha Memorial Hospital — continue to work at the hospital and are available to provide all antenatal, birthing, and postnatal care.
If you are booked to have your baby at Leongatha Memorial Hospital, your care and booking remain unchanged. Antenatal appointments with doctors will be undertaken at the hospital, we will contact you to arrange.
For pregnant women who were previously receiving antenatal care through the Leongatha Healthcare Group clinic and are seeking advice about maternity care options, our maternity team is available to provide information and support if needed.
📞 Maternity Services: (03) 5667 5556
Our team is currently receiving a high number of calls. If we are unable to speak with you straight away, we will take your details and ensure a member of the maternity team contacts you as soon as possible.
You are safe to continue all of your pregnancy care with us.
We remain committed to supporting expectant parents and families in our community and will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

LEONGATHA I Behind the scenes, safety comes first.
When you step into an operating theatre, the work that has gone on behind the scenes is often just as important as what you can see.
In keeping with this, we’re making some important upgrades to the air-handling systems in our operating theatres.
Supported by funding from the Victorian Department of Health, the upgrades will improve air quality, reliability, and infection control, while also reducing environmental impact through use of more energy-efficient systems.
These improvements support safer surgical environments for patients and better working conditions for our clinical teams.
The works are being delivered in stages to minimise disruption, so care can continue safely and smoothly.
Because in healthcare, the details matter.
And getting them right protects everyone.

Tune in tomorrow Sunday 11 January at 2pm, on Channel 9HD/WIN-TV to see the award-winning documentary 'Conquering Skin Cancer'.

Featuring compelling interviews with survivors, experts and a few Australian celebrities (and some of our staff), it highlights the importance of enhanced prevention, regular self-checking and early detection, equitable treatment access and innovative research into skin cancer.

If you missed seeing this in cinemas last year, this is your chance!!

And it’s on at 2pm AEST which is peak UV outdoors, so there’s no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than lolling on the couch with your friends and family.

KOOWEERUP - Investing in our people, strengthening our care

At Kooweerup Hospital, we’re committed to creating opportunities that help our people learn, grow and build meaningful careers while continuing to care for their communities.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Jaidee, Michelle and Lyndsay, three dedicated members of our Patient Services team, who have successfully completed their Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, turning a long-held passion into a formal qualification.

Their journey began through an in-house career expo and was supported by Kooweerup Hospital recognising both their ambition and future workforce needs. Balancing full-time work, family commitments and a fast-paced hybrid training program, they completed all units by the end of 2025 — an outstanding achievement.

Stories like this reflect what Bayside Health is all about: supporting career pathways, investing in our people, and strengthening our health services across the region.

Congratulations Jaidee, Michelle and Lyndsay, we’re so proud of you!
