Such brilliant words to read and remember.
🌊THE WEIGHT OF VALUE🌊
Ok, so anyone who has followed me for a while knows that I abhor talking about weight. I’ve explained why in the past, but another layer of weight-talk-f**kery has revealed itself to me recently after seeing some as**at on the internet saying “bUt iT’s AbOuT yOuR hEaLtH”.
Let’s stop and think about that. I cannot for one second believe that some random f**kstick on the internet actually gives a hoot about the actual health of any plus-sized woman. There is an absolute vacuum of resources and research when it comes to women’s health, so I’m confident that that’s not actually what his rage was about, or he’d be lobbying for better healthcare to be available to us rather that spitting abuse on the interwebs.
It’s about value.
The smallminded idea that we must be a certain aesthetic to be of value to our society.
And what absolute horsesh*t that is.
Our weight does not determine our value, no more than our health determines our value. Our our favourite colour for that matter.
What does determine our value? The way we show up when it matters. Our character, our effort, our commitment and our personal values.
Our health does not stop us from being able to inspire, love and create.
Our ability to contribute to humanity is not limited by the shape, robustness, wobbliness or flexibility of our meat-suits.
Actually, I'm going out on a limb here and saying that that my weight - and my health issues - have actually contributed to, and increased my value. I am more compassionate, more determined, more curious and more capable at my job and in my community, than I ever could have been without this lived experience.
We are all valuable. We’ve all got the capacity to love, hope, dream, inspire, create, motivate, share and wonder. We all make the world better.
Our integrity and compassion are not measured in relation to our tuck-shop arms. Our curiosity and inspiration are not dictated by our mobility. Our capacity to be generous and joyful are not reliant on our thigh gap.
Can we please stop shrinking our value. Let’s stop wasting our precious time being worried about how our aesthetic is perceived, and get on with living, and playing, and celebrating our VALUE.
Love you Mermaids. xx
