We believe that self-understanding is key to experiencing a meaningful life. From feeling that we lack purpose, to relationship difficulties, to struggles with uncertainty – life’s challenges often originate from a poor understanding of ourselves. It is only when we uncover how our childhood and life experiences have shaped us, can we be at peace with our past and move toward a path of fulfilment. From adolescents and young adults, to parents of young children and soon-to-be parents, Woollahra Psychology helps people to not only work toward symptom relief, but also to develop insight, self-esteem, and a capacity to love, work and play. As for parenting, it could be said that it is our most important undertaking; however, for the majority of people, we are unprepared and it may not come naturally. At Woollahra Psychology, we firmly believe that in order to raise our little people, we need to first raise ourselves. This is a hard truth, but one that offers a loving connection with our children, if we have the courage to step up to the challenge.

As Viktor Frankl wisely said, between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

An eloquent reminder to embrace the space that we always have available to us, before responding.

When we were little, our sadness was bigger than we were, because we did not have the knowledge or capacity to process big feelings. Our only choice was often to shut down in the face of pain. As adults, however, we can learn to do something different, and not run away from our feelings. Opening ourselves up, rather than shutting down, is much more powerful than the big feelings we are opening up to. This discovery can lead to so many new capacities; kindness, strength, resilience, and understanding.
