Sharing our knowledge ๐Ÿ’™

We believe that being well informed plays an important role in recovery, ongoing care and confidence with health decisions.

Our blog section, Sharing Our Knowledge, is where we share clear, evidence-based information on common topics that are relevant to many patients, written to be practical, accessible and easy to understand.

Our latest blog explores the role of low level laser therapy in cancer recovery, outlining how it may be used to support tissue healing, pain management, and recovery when clinically appropriate.

Whether youโ€™re navigating your own recovery, supporting someone else, or simply wanting to better understand available treatment options, these resources are designed to help you feel informed and supported.

You can explore all of our blogs on the website under Sharing Our Knowledge.

Chronic pitting oedema in the lower limb can cause heaviness, discomfort and changes in mobility but with the right treatment, symptoms can be managed and improved over time.

Laser therapy and manual massage therapy techniques were used to support the foot and ankle, encourage fluid movement, reduce swelling, and improve tissue softness.

Targeted techniques like these play an important role in management and overall comfort for chronic odema conditions. ๐Ÿ’™

Back into routine after the festive period ๐Ÿ’™

The holiday period often brings changes to routine due to travel, time with family, rest or a natural pause in appointments and treatment.

As the new year begins, this can be an important time to re-establish maintenance and ongoing care. When regular treatment is interrupted, symptoms such as tightness, swelling, discomfort or fatigue can gradually return.

Maintenance care plays a key role in:
๐Ÿ”น Supporting symptom management
๐Ÿ”น Reducing the risk of flare-ups or progression
๐Ÿ”น Maintaining strength, mobility and everyday comfort

Continuing care helps support stability over time and allows treatment to remain proactive, rather than reactive - guided, individualised, and tailored to your needs. ๐Ÿ’™

As we step into the New Year, we wanted to pause and say thank you ๐Ÿ’™

Thank you for trusting us with your care, for allowing us to support you through different stages of recovery, and for being part of our clinic community.

The past year was shaped by many meaningful moments: from coming together at community events like our slow-stitching art workshop during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the 440 Challenge for Head & Neck Cancer awareness, to collaborating with other health professionals through in-services, celebrating patient milestones, and sharing team moments along the way. From familiar faces to new connections, weโ€™re truly grateful to walk alongside you.

Wishing you a healthy, supported New Year ahead ๐Ÿ’™

Exercises after DIEP Reconstruction โ€“ Stage 3 ๐Ÿ’™

As recovery continues following DIEP reconstruction, Stage 3 exercises help build on earlier phases by gradually increasing strength and control through the core.

This exercise series is designed to:
๐Ÿ”น Improve abdominal strength and stability
๐Ÿ”น Support controlled, functional movement
๐Ÿ”น Encourage confidence with everyday tasks and activities

Recovery looks different for everyone, and progression should always feel guided and supported. Consistent, well-paced exercise can continue to play an important role in restoring function and comfort over time โญ๏ธ

As the holidays approach, many people will be travelling and for those living with lymphoedema, a little extra planning can make a big difference. โœˆ๏ธ ๐ŸŽ„

Travel can place extra demands on the lymphatic system but with the right strategies in place, itโ€™s possible to reduce the risk of swelling and discomfort while on the move.

โœ” Stay well hydrated and limit diuretics such as coffee and alcohol
โœ” Choose loose, non-restrictive clothing
โœ” Take regular breaks to move, stretch and change position
โœ” Wear your prescribed compression garments, especially when flying
โœ” Use lightweight luggage with wheels and avoid heavy lifting
โœ” Protect your skin with moisturiser, sunscreen, insect repellent and antiseptic cream to reduce the risk of infection

Weโ€™re here to support you as you prepare for travel and manage lymphoedema along the way. ๐Ÿ’™

Spring into Summer Care ๐ŸŒธโ˜€๏ธ

Summer is here and as the weather warms up, itโ€™s common for lymphoedema symptoms to increase as heat and humidity can lead to extra swelling and discomfort.

Nowโ€™s the perfect time to book a maintenance appointment and get your compression garments checked (they should be updated every 6 months).

Stay ahead of summer - don't let lymphoedema hold you back from enjoying the season. ๐Ÿ’™

Movement with Meaning ๐Ÿ’™

Hereโ€™s a little glimpse into what personalised exercise therapy can look like during cancer treatment.

In this session, Mr H is working through gentle, guided exercises that support balance, coordination and strength - all adapted to how he was feeling on the day while undergoing chemotherapy. And yesโ€ฆ the blues playlist definitely helps keep things moving. ๐ŸŽถ

Each exercise is chosen to feel safe, manageable and purposeful, with options he can also continue at home to build confidence between sessions.

Everyoneโ€™s treatment journey is different, and thatโ€™s why we tailor every session to the person in front of us; their energy, their goals, and what their body needs right now. ๐Ÿ’™

Using Gua Sha for Neck Tightness & Swelling ๐ŸŒฟ

Self-management tools like gua sha can be a helpful way to support your recovery between physiotherapy sessions. In this video, weโ€™re demonstrating a tailored example of how the tool can be used to gently ease neck tightness, encourage lymphatic flow, and reduce discomfort or swelling.

When used with the right technique, gua sha can:
โœจ Improve tissue mobility
โœจ Support lymphatic drainage
โœจ Reduce tightness and tension
โœจ Enhance comfort day-to-day

For many people, these small techniques can make a meaningful difference between appointments, especially when tightness tends to build up with work, stress, posture or scar-related changes.

If gua sha is something youโ€™d like to explore, weโ€™re always happy to walk you through the safest way to use it and tailor the technique to your recovery needs. ๐Ÿ’™
