It’s been one week since we’ve successfully moved to Bangkok. Extraordinarily enough, it was harder to find flights direct from Phuket to Bangkok than it was to fly from Sydney to Phuket!

Time for some gratitude:
- I’m incredibly thankful for everyone’s supportive words and messages and I hope you are all thriving and surviving as best as you can
- I’m forever grateful to have unconditional and supporting love from my friends and family back in Aus
- I’m eternally grateful to have new friends in Bangkok who have accepted the quirky me as I am with no judgement and open arms
- and, I’m thankful to be the proud mum of 6 luscious plants, thanks to my new awesome friend for introducing me to the plant doctor, Fern . Thank you Fern, for bringing colour and life to our apartment!

I have arrived safely in Phuket and am now doing my quarantine in the Twin Palms Resort.

It came to me as a surprise when I found out that quarantine resorts are an option provided for travellers entering Thailand. These quarantine approved resorts are part of what’s called the “Sandbox” program. All staff are fully vaccinated and follow stringent COVID protocols, including checking temperatures of all guests, mandatory mask wearing and checking in everyone using the country’s contact tracing app.

All guests of these Sandbox resorts must also be fully vaccinated and have their second dose at least 14 days before arrival. COVID testing is also mandatory when arriving in Thailand, on day 6 and day 13 of your quarantine period. If your COVID test is negative on arrival, you are free to roam around the resort, as well as visit other Sandbox approved locations.

On another note, I was devastated to read that NSW is now in a mandatory lockdown with only 5km radius for exercise and essential shopping for one week. I hope everyone in NSW is keeping as safe and sane as possible.

Yesterday was my last day of clinic and now the next journey abroad begins.

Thank you so much to all of my patients for your presence at the clinic. It has been a privilege and an honour to have been a part of your health and wellness story. Hearing your stories, understanding your troubles and improving your health has made me love my job as an acupuncturist. So thank you for helping me with the classic quote “find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”

Today is the first day in 12 years that I won’t be practicing as an acupuncturist. I must admit that I’m nervous as to what the next step will hold, but I won’t let my fear from stopping me try and enjoy new opportunities.

Can't wait to see you all when I come back in 2024.

Sending you all of my love. Rise Calmly Every Day

How many sessions does it take for the acupuncture treatment to be effective?
Every treatment process is different for every person. This is due to a number of factors including:

-What the condition is (e.g. lower back pain vs irritable bowel syndrome)

-How long the condition has been going on for (e.g. 4 weeks vs 4 years)

-The underlying cause of the condition (e.g. sports injury, stress)

-Aggravating factors (e.g. twisting/bending the back, consumption of dairy)

-Alleviating factors (e.g. massage/heat pack, avoiding dairy)

-The current lifestyle of the patient (e.g. poor diet, interrupted sleep patterns, long work hours)

Identifying all of these factors is crucial in providing effective treatments to reach short and long-term goals. The general rule of thumb for my patients is to receive weekly acupuncture treatments for the first four weeks, followed by a review. The frequency of treatments may vary depending on the severity and urgency of the condition. Once the short-term goal is reached, I recommend all of my patients to receive monthly acupuncture treatments to continue the progression of their health.

The initial consultation is the most important process of the treatment process. Questions will be asked about the following:

-Dietary habits
-Sleeping habits
-Bowel movements
-Muscle conditions
-Exercise routines
-Menstrual history
-Muscle complaints and history of injuries
-Stress levels

Also a physical assessments is performed. This includes looking at the tongue and palpating the radial pulse, abdomen and back (if required). The combination of the questionnaire and physical assessments helps me in identifying other abnormalities that may be contributing to the primary concern.

The selection of acupuncture points is highly dependent on the accurate diagnosis of the patient. This includes asking questions not just about the main concern, but also asking about the patient’s dietary habits, bowel movements and sleep routine. Asking these questions helps the practitioner to have a good insight into the patient’s body processes.

When the needles are inserted, a series of events occur in the body including secretion of neurotransmitters, suppression of cortisol and adrenaline, immunological responses, and arterial capillary responses. Neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins are released to provide a pleasant calm state of mind. Immunological responses include release of histamine and white blood cells to the site of the needle to stimulate repair and recovery. This is particularly beneficial for soft tissue injuries and muscle tension.

"I’ve thought about getting acupuncture, but the thought of having needles in my body really scares me"

As ironic as it sounds, receiving acupuncture treatments are quite relaxing. However, if the thought of having needles in your body for 20 minutes doesn’t sound appealing, then you may want to try Japanese style acupuncture. This style of acupuncture is the most gentle form of needle technique compared to other styles, such as Chinese or Korean style acupuncture. Japanese style acupuncture involves inserting needles superficially into the skin layer without any manipulation or twisting of the needles and is the recommended technique used for those who are sensitive to needles.
