Today we held our annual Cross Country 🧑‍🦯🏃‍♂️👩‍🦽

Staff and students wore their house colours – Red for Louis (Braille) house and yellow for Lilli (Nielsen) house 🔴🟡 These house names are important to us because both braille and Lilli Nielsen’s Active Learning approach are part of our MDVI pedagogy.

Learners were able to walk alongside a guide, walk using human guide, run using a running tether, or be pushed in their wheelchair or stroller. It was wonderful to close the event with a sausage sizzle, Zooper Dooper ice blocks and music at the finish line!

A big thank you to Churchie for supporting learners to engage in this whole school event! You made our morning extra fun 🤩

Last Friday, some of our braille using students attended the annual Braille Literacy Challenge at Braille House 👏

The day involved traveling to and from the event on the school bus (Little Ted), participating in braille reading and writing activities, connecting with other learners across Brisbane who use braille and celebrating the day’s success with McDonald’s for lunch.

We are so proud of all of our students’ achievements!

Earlier this term we celebrated Book Week! This year’s theme was “Book an Adventure” 📚

Staff and students dressed as a character from one of their favourite adventure stories and gathered for a special Book Week event. Learners and staff used their voices, switches, PODDs, Auslan and talkers to share who they were dressed up as and then had their costume described 😊 They then listened to a story read by Head of Curriculum Angela, before moving into small groups to read and explore tactile story kits around the room.

As part of their Health and Physical Education (HPE) program, Oval Two have been learning how to play blind cricket. To do this, they had the pleasure of hosting Queensland Blind Cricket Association. Oval Two students learnt the fundamental movement skills of batting, bowling and fielding in a game of blind cricket. Students worked hard to use a loud voice to call “ready” and then “play” when bowling the rattle ball to the batter.

The program also provided an opportunity for Oval Two students to connect with adults who have vision impairment and expand their understanding of recreation and leisure activities available to them in the community.

Our most recent assembly celebrated our Middle Years learners!

Students received awards for resilience when trying new things; hard work during literacy sign in and progressing to the “I Can Do Braille” program; participation and gross motor development in the Blind Cricket program; daily persistence using the stairs to get to the classroom; and demonstrating great improvement in communication 👏

Assembly also included a birthday cake and singing for Austin’s birthday and a martial arts demonstration from Saiyan who has recently begun attending a weekly martial arts lesson with his Oval 2 class for Physical Education.

It's Speech Pathology Week 2025!

The theme for the week is "Impact through Communication," which celebrates the significant ways speech pathologists help people to connect, express themselves, and participate more fully in life. Each day of the week highlights a different aspect of this impact, such as connection, confidence, inclusion, empowerment, opportunity, wellbeing, and independence.
At Narby, we have the best in the business, Catriona, who empowers student voice each and every day. Catriona is living her best life when SLP week and book week collide 😉
Big shout out and thanks to Catriona for the great work she does at Narby.
