In recognition of International Men’s Day, we caught up with Ray Nagas for a yarn.
Proudly Wiradjuri on his mother’s side and Gooreng Gooreng and Erub on his father’s, Ray has been part of ATSICHS for five years. He started as a Community Liaison Officer and now works as a Community Connector. His role is all about bringing people together and for Ray, that’s what matters most.
Ray runs men’s groups across Logan and Brisbane, creating safe spaces for men to come together, have a yarn, and support each other.
“The groups mean a lot to the men,” Ray says. “They give them a chance to connect and take ownership.”
For Ray, International Men’s Day is a time to stop and think about the men who helped him become the person he is today.
“It means a lot to me because it’s a chance to reflect on the men who shaped me into the father and man I am now.”
Ray’s message to young men:
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not alone someone is always willing to walk with you.”
As a dad, Ray says fatherhood has been one of his greatest joys.
“I’ve learnt so much from my sons, and I hope they learn from me too. We’re all on a learning journey together.”
Here’s to celebrating men and boys everywhere and the deadly work of people like Ray who make our communities stronger.
