Summer is well and truely here!☀
To help you thrive this season, here are 5 practical tips to staying on track in the warmer season!

1. Hydrate Before Hunger Hits
As the temperature rises, thirst can easily be mistaken for hunger. Keep a water bottle handy and infuse it with slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries for a refreshing boost.

2. Embrace Seasonal Produce
Load up on hydrating seasonal produce like watermelon, berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy greens, they’re packed with vitamins and fibre.

3. Plan Light, Balanced Meals
Opt for meals that combine lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains. Think grilled chicken with quinoa and roasted vegetables, or a chickpea salad with olive oil and herbs.

4. Keep Healthy Snacks Ready
Warm weather can make you crave quick, convenient bites. Keep snack-sized portions of nuts, fruit, yoghurt, or veggie sticks in the fridge for easy, nutritious options.

5. Make Meals a Social Event
Summer is perfect for connecting with friends and family over meals. Turn dinner into a picnic, BBQ, or alfresco salad night. Sharing meals in a relaxed, social setting can help you enjoy food mindfully and make healthier choices naturally.

What’s our take on desserts, you ask? Everybody loves a sweet treat, particularly in the cooler months. But are sweets the enemy?

Yes and no. Too much sugar is not a habit you want to keep up. So on a daily basis, avoiding sweet, sugary, fried foods and empty carbs, and increasing your intake of low GI foods, lean protein, and vegetables is the best approach from a dietitian’s perspective. This helps to support overall health, maintain balanced blood sugar and keep you feeling satiated.

However, occasional desserts are definitely part of a balanced diet, and certainly on the menu in a traditional Mediterranean Diet, where nothing is off limits. While desserts are relished in moderation, they are relished, nonetheless.

A dessert near and dear to us is Galaktoboureko (pronounced galack-tow-boureko)! If you haven’t tried it, you really should! Layered filo pastry encasing a heavenly vanilla custard filling, and topped with a generous drizzling of sweet syrup.

Use your mindful eating practices to savour every bite!

A sprinkling of feta makes everything better! 😋

Thirty grams of feta cheese is a great option for one of your daily dairy servings. Feta is a fermented dairy, and a staple in the Mediterranean Diet. An ideal source of calcium and protein that also contains beneficial bacteria to support good gut health.

Use feta to balance out the beautifully rich tomato flavours in a dish like this Mediterranean Chickpea Casserole (Revithia me Spanaki Kai Feta) - recipe available in The Mediterranean Diet the Lifestyle of Eating eBook.

It’s also a lovely addition to your cheese or meze platter, your salad, or crumbled over meat or vegetables.

Seafood - and eat it! Many of us forget about seafood in the winter months, but if you’re looking for a quick, healthy and lean protein that can be ready on the table in 15 minutes, you can’t go past it.

This is one of our all time favourite Greek dishes - Prawn Kritharaki and Feta. Prawns are simmered in tomato sauce flavoured with herbs and ouzo, and finished with a crumbly gut-loving feta cheese. Yum!

Recipe available in The Mediterranean Diet, the Lifestyle of Eating.
