L'Arche Brisbane is an international federation of multi-faith communities where people with and without an intellectual disabilities live alongside one another. L'Arche, a French word for the Ark, seeks to create communities where people live a simple life of work, care, prayer and celebration. We are a very diverse group from all walks of life, some of our disabilities are obvious, some are hidden but all of us share in the mission of L'Arche, of changing the world one heart at a time. From these simple beginnings L'Arche has grown into an international federation of 138 communities in over 30 countries.

It was a crane-spotter's paradise at QEII hospital this morning. 4 cranes in operation for Warren's viewing pleasure, with assistant Sarah and volunteer Philipp, visiting from Germany. To add to the joy, the dentist gave a good report.

We’re a community that celebrates the uniqueness of every person. Whether you live with or without a disability, your story, your gifts, your quirks, and your presence matter here.

L’Arche is about belonging, not just being included, but being truly known and valued. It’s about friendship, laughter, shared cups of tea, and building a life together.

We’re always looking to welcome new people (or old friends we haven’t seen in a while). So if you think you might like to be part of this, we’d love to hear from you.

Because community is for everyone. Especially you.

Danny’s 20-Year Community Anniversary!

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since Danny first joined our community?

Anyone who knows Danny knows that life with him is full of music, memory, and friendship. He’ll break into a hymn at the drop of a hat, regale you with stories from his childhood and travels, and somehow remembers the tiniest details most of us have long forgotten. And if there’s Irish or Scottish music playing? You’ll probably catch him smiling, singing along or both.

We’d love your help celebrating this milestone.

Do you have a favourite photo of Danny, a great memory, or a moment that sums him up perfectly? Drop it in the comments or post it with so we can all enjoy it.

Let’s make this a celebration as special as Danny is!

Today we acknowledge the grief, loss, and ongoing impacts experienced by the Stolen Generations and their families. We remember the children who were taken and the communities forever changed. We recognise that many survivors are still waiting for justice, support, and healing. Earlier this year, The Healing Foundation released a report which revealed that only 6 percent of the recommendations from the original Bringing Them Home report have been fully put into action. Many survivors of the Stolen Generations are no longer with us. Those who remain are growing older, and the need to support them in their later years is more urgent than ever.

As a community that believes in listening deeply, sharing life, and building belonging, we at L’Arche Brisbane stand in solidarity with Stolen Generations survivors and their descendants. We acknowledge the ongoing pain, and we commit to being part of the healing by learning, reflecting, and taking meaningful action.

We cannot wait another generation. It's time for politicians from all sides and all levels of government to support the pressing needs of Stolen Generations survivors.

This week, we’re celebrating the people who bring light, laughter, and love into L’Arche Brisbane simply by showing up and saying yes.

Whether you're someone who shares a cuppa and a chat, helps with transport, serves on the board, joins in at events, plays games, cooks meals, or just makes space for friendship. We see you, and we’re so grateful that you have chosen to be part of our community.

Thank you to our incredible volunteers!

Celebrating Diversity, Dialogue, and Community

Today is the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and it's also National Volunteer Week. It feels like the perfect moment to celebrate the richness of our L’Arche Brisbane community.

One of the greatest gifts of being part of the international L’Arche federation is the opportunity to meet and share life with people from all over the world. We are lucky to welcome volunteers and assistants from many different cultures. Each person brings their own stories, traditions and perspectives that help us grow in understanding and connection.

Our current assistants are a vibrant and diverse group who remind us every day of the beauty of difference and the power of shared life. Whether it's community dinners, music nights, quiet cups of tea or big celebrations, every moment is made richer by our diversity.

It is a privilege to hear stories from across the globe about people with and without disabilities building community together. These stories look different in each country, but they are united by the same values of friendship, belonging and the power of creating communities where the unique gifts of each person are celebrated.

To all our past and present volunteers, from around the world and from right here in Australia, thank you. You make L’Arche more joyful, more inclusive, and more alive.
