L'Arche Brisbane is an international federation of multi-faith communities where people with and without an intellectual disabilities live alongside one another. L'Arche, a French word for the Ark, seeks to create communities where people live a simple life of work, care, prayer and celebration. We are a very diverse group from all walks of life, some of our disabilities are obvious, some are hidden but all of us share in the mission of L'Arche, of changing the world one heart at a time. From these simple beginnings L'Arche has grown into an international federation of 138 communities in over 30 countries.

On the International Day of People with Disability, the world is invited to pause and ask:
Who do we make space for?
Who do we listen to?
Who gets to be seen, valued, and celebrated?

At L’Arche, we believe inclusion is not just a policy or a slogan; it’s something we practice in the everyday.

Our gathering today was an expression of this deeper truth. It was a time to celebrate belonging, but also to acknowledge the real pain of exclusion that many people with disability still face. After lunch, each person, with and without intellectual disability, offered their own experiences about what inclusion means to them. We learned from our members with disabilities that inclusion is about having the opportunity and support to share our gifts, it is about being welcomed and celebrated and having the opportunity to participate in decision making.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared stories, and helped make this day possible. Together, we can continue building a world where everyone has a place at the table.

A crane-spotter's paradise in West End today -they were everywhere. This site on Pidgeon Close had added extras, including cement trucks pouring concrete for a 5th floor slab, a shady tree, easy parking, and a comfortable bench for his weary assistant!

Thank You for a Wonderful Get Online Week Event!
A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our Click & Connect: BBQ + Tech Help Day on Saturday!

It was a fantastic afternoon of learning, laughter, and connection exploring new ways to build confidence online and discover helpful resources from Good Things Australia.

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make the day possible, our volunteers, assistants, and community members who gave their time, energy, and heart.

Special thanks to Good Things Foundation for their support and for the grant that made this event possible.

Together, we proved that learning new skills can be both easy, and a lot of fun!

I don't really have the words to describe how fantastic the Screech Arts drama performance was last night. It had to be experienced to be fully appreciated. I feel honoured to have been there. The show was the culmination of 2 years of dedication and weekly rehearsals. There were dark, sinister moments set to eerie music, which reminded me of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall"; there were exuberant Abba-style dance scenes; and each PWD performer had a moment in the spotlight to share a significant story from their life.
The challenges to director Sarah McGill and scriptwriters Martina and Nyella were clear. They met them with a piece which I think sets a standard for wheelchair theatre. Congratulations to all the support performers including our Sarah Manyang and Mara McKinney, and of course congratulations to all the stars of the show, including our Warren, and Anthony.

Sharing Light Across the World

As L’Arche communities around the world prepare to celebrate the Festival of Light, we’re reminded of how our shared life connects us across countries and cultures.

This week, Danny, Jackson, and Chris from L’Arche Brisbane had an opportunity to connect with L'Arche Spokane in the United States. During their visit, they presented a handmade table runner, created from patches created during our Community Weekend in August.

This gift was a symbol of connection and belonging, a reminder that even across oceans, the spirit of L’Arche shines bright, in creativity, hospitality, and shared joy.
