Sunshine Welfare And Remedial Association was founded in 1975 by twin sisters Dorothy and Moyia O'Brien, originally located at Roma Street. The "Pink Twins" were amongst the first occupational therapists in Australia. They have enabled thousands of adults with disabilities to engage with the social and economic community and their legacy continues today. We provide choices of skills development and supports for clients to achieve their own goals and aspirations. Amongst the skills provided include independent living, domestic skills, baking, self-catering, hospitality, metal recycling, horticulture, physical activity, developing social interaction, friendships, and contributing to the community. Developing these skills are acquired through key learning areas; Sunshine Cafe, Sunshine Bakery, Community Access, Recycling Enterprise, Horticulture, Communication Skills, Creative & Performing Arts, Learning Skills for Independence, and Education and Employment Training. If you would like to join the SWARA community in any way, please feel free to contact details listed.

As we head into the warmer months, our beautiful garden is ready to thrive β€” and so are our participants!

Our swara Gardening Program is more than just planting and watering β€” it's about:
✨ Boosting physical health

πŸ’š And yes β€” it’s a wonderfully therapeutic activity too!

With the sun shining brighter, staying SunSmart is a top priority, so hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water are always part of the plan. β˜€οΈ

🌟 It’s the little things that make a big difference 🌟

Today one of our community access clients helped fill up the swara ute with petrol β€” a small task, but a powerful reminder that with the right support, our clients can be included in everything.

Let’s keep supporting our clients in all the little things because those little things all add up to something pretty amazing. πŸ’›

β˜€οΈ Sunshine, smiles, and coffee... what more could you ask for on a beautiful day out in the community?

We supported one of our community access clients on a coffee outingβ€”just a simple trip that turned into a great moment of connection and confidence-building. It’s amazing what a bit of sunshine and a friendly chat can do! β˜•πŸ˜Š

Every second Saturday, we head out into the community for an activity that’s both engaging and practical. This time, we went on a group shopping trip to pick up sausages β€” then fired up the BBQ for a sausage sizzle in the park! 🌭

Participants got hands-on experience with navigating the store, selecting what we needed, and handling the checkout process. Then it was time to cook, serve, and enjoy lunch together β€” all while soaking up the winter sun in a beautiful green space. πŸŒΏβ›…

These outings are more than just fun β€” they build confidence, independence, and everyday life skills in a relaxed, social setting.
