We're thrilled to welcome the wonderful Dr Christina Mullany to the Village Practice team!

Dr Christina is a graduate of Wollongong University and is dedicated to the optimal care of her patients, empowering them to make informed healthcare decisions, prioritising autonomy and dignity at all times.

Appointments with Dr Christina will be available on Wednesdays. She has a special interest in children’s and women’s health and is passionate about supporting patients to achieve their health goals at every stage of their lives.

When not at work, Dr Christina is a keen mountain biker and runner who loves exploring our beautiful coastline, playing music with her husband, and spending time with her family.

We love Fridays at Village Practice!

This week we were lucky enough to have two lunchtime treats! Our lovely former registrar Dr Natasha Staude surprised us with a visit, and brought along her gorgeous baby girl! It was such a joy to see them both and of course, there were plenty of cuddles and smiles to go around.

To make the day even sweeter we shared some (very belated) birthday cake for two of our favourite people: our amazing Clinical Director Natalie who works SO hard behind the scenes, and also our fabulous receptionist Mel, whose Friday energy is absolutely infectious in the best way possible ♥️

As we head into Mother’s Day weekend, we want to send love to every kind of mum in our community - biological, adoptive, step, foster, chosen family, and also anyone who holds that caring, nurturing role in someone’s life. However you mother, just know that you are seen, valued and appreciated 🫶🏻

Wishing everyone a safe and restful weekend - and hopefully also a little moment to be appreciated for all that you do too!

We recently said a bittersweet farewell to the wonderful Dr Natasha Staude as she wrapped up her registrar placement with us and prepares for the exciting new journey of motherhood! We can’t wait to meet her little bub and look forward to seeing them both for a visit soon ☺️

With endings come new beginnings, and we’re thrilled to warmly welcome Dr Alister Turbayne to the team!
Dr Alister is our newest registrar and will be seeing patients with us over the next 6 months. He has a special interest in chronic disease management, mental health, family medicine, general medicine, and children’s health, bringing a well-rounded, non judgemental and compassionate approach to patient care.

Last week, we invited Alison Byrnes, one of our local MPs, to the practice for an open and honest conversation about the challenges facing healthcare in our community. We see these issues every day - the rising cost of living and its direct impact on healthcare access, long waits to see specialists, limited mental health support, and the increasing pressure on GPs and nurses to step in where the system falls short.

As a general practice focused on supporting our community, we do everything we can to fill the gaps whilst also trying to maintain the level of care we believe our patients deserve. Whether it’s managing complex mental health concerns because psychiatrists are booked out for months, or treating acute conditions in the community to keep people out of hospital, we do our very best - but there are limits to what we can do alone. Medicare rebates haven’t kept pace with the true cost of providing care, and strict Medicare billing rules sometimes make it harder for us to give patients the time and support they need. These barriers impact both healthcare providers and the people we care for, which is why we wanted to share what it’s really like on the ground in the hopes that decision-makers gain a clearer understanding of the realities for both patients and frontline healthcare workers.

It was a positive discussion, and while there are no quick fixes, we’re hopeful that by speaking up and sharing our experience, we can help push for real improvements - not just here in Woonona, but across the Illawarra and beyond.

In the meantime, we’ll keep showing up and doing what we can for our patients. But real change happens when more voices are heard. If you’ve been feeling these challenges too - whether as a patient or a fellow healthcare provider - we encourage you to reach out to your local MP, share your experience, and help keep the conversation going.

🎄Holiday Practice Hours 🎄

Over the Christmas and New Year period, the practice will be open as usual, except for public holidays, when we will be closed.

If you need to see a doctor or require medical care outside of our opening hours, there are several local options available, which are also bulk-billed.

For urgent medical issues, such as minor fractures, severe sprains, ear infections, or cuts requiring stitches, you can attend either of the following:

➕ Bulli Urgent Care Centre (located on Hospital Rd, Bulli) Open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM during the week and 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on weekends. Please note they will be closed on Christmas Day.

➕ Corrimal Urgent Care Centre (located on Underwood St, Corrimal) Open every day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM including weekends and public holidays.

After hours home-visits are available through Radio Doctor by calling 02 4228 5522. A fantastic service to use when you are experiencing non-life-threatening issues but you cannot travel such as high fever in children, worsening chronic illness symptoms, or mild injuries and are available from 6pm-6am on weekdays, 12pm Saturday to 6am Monday, and 24 hours on public holidays.

For any life-threatening medical emergencies, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, or symptoms of a stroke, please attend the Emergency Department (ED) at either Wollongong or Shellharbour Hospitals or contact 000 for assistance.
