Heath Ryan - Almost all us have seen the video's and like everything these days the feelings are very strong no matter what side you're on. This is not another platform for opinions to be expressed so please do that elsewhere. My opinion is that we have right now heavy focus on ethical riding and horse care that is a learning opportunity, I would like to initiate a post that triggers action in ourselves. What is one thing you can or have changed about your life that has a positive impact on your own horses or ponies? I'll start, having some serious body issues and being unable to ride warmbloods I have opted to be one of the riders on our ponies. I have lost 10kg and am on the way to loose another 5. I am also doing personal training to strengthen my muscles to be a lighter more controlled body. Let's glorify the actions we take to help our horses, tell us something you changed that you feel good about.

Let's talk about changing the width of your saddle.........specifically those that require pressure from a press to alter their width. In many countries they choose to refit the correct sized tree rather than using a press. This is more difficult to do in Australia with the cost of time and travel back to the saddle maker, so it has become a common occurrence that saddles here are pressure adjusted to be made wider or narrower. Sometimes heat is involved, sometimes it is a dry press. The dry press in particular can go drastically wrong done incorrectly and destroy the tree - I see it often 😔

So how do we ensure we are not hurting our horses and destroying our valuable saddles?

🐴 Step 1...... email the manufacturer of your saddle preferably with your saddles serial number. Please ensure you have official advise from the people who made the saddle.

🐴 IMPORTANT !........knowing your saddles capacity for adjustment is not the end of the investigation.

🐴 What else do you need to know?.......THE PROCEDURE your saddle should be adjusted, I can't emphasise this enough 🙏 your saddle can be ruined by incorrect procedure. No amount of adjustment even a tiny bit is ok if the process is done incorrectly, uneven pressure to the tree no matter how small can break the tree or twist it.

🐴 Equipment!....... do you know what brand press is being used? Do the manufacturers of your saddle approve the press itself?

🐴 .....Are the panels removed so the tree adjustment is confirmed successful? This is an absolute must! How does anyone know what is going on in there without looking? - request evidence the tree has been visually inspected and measured so you don't find out next time you ride.

Adjustment of tree widths has the good chance of going wrong when not done incorrectly. It happens all the time......don't risk it.
