One of the first flowers on the planet is the orchid. The orchid family is about 145 million years old: they existed already in the Late Cretaceous period. Interestingly, wild orchids are not as capricious as their indoor relatives: they live in any climate and on any soil - from swampy to desert. Some orchids use tree trunks as support and grow directly on the branches, without parasitism or causing them any harm.
