All Yoga Moves West classes are designed to be inclusive with absolute beginners and experienced yoga lovers all welcome. Variations are tailored to suit the needs of different bodies and skill sets. No matter your age, fitness or flexibility, our classes allow you to work at your own pace with the availability of bolsters, blocks and straps for a supportive and safe practice.

“I see you, I hear you, I honour you” is one of my interpretations of the Sanskrit word Namaste that you’ll often hear at the end of a yoga class. The most common being “I bow to the divine in you” or “the sacred in me recognizes the sacred in you”, however you like to interpret it, it’s a pretty special feeling to be seen & heard for exactly who you are.

A little sequence you can try at home that I sometimes like to start my home practice with as it warms the spine up by moving in all directions - sitting on a block or cushion, grounding through the sits bones and lifting up through the spine and crown of the head, interlace fingers and take overhead, rolling shoulders down the back to create space for your neck. Lowering one arm to the floor while lifting up through the other before taking a side stretch, follow with a gentle twist, finishing with a forward bend. Remember to repeat to the other side!

Balasana or Child’s Pose, is a pose of rest. It is a pose where we give ourselves permission to not do, to just be, where the body can be still and rest. It is a foundational yoga posture that reminds us that inaction can be as valuable as action. Child’s pose is a gentle stretch for the shoulders, back, hips, neck, and ankles, and can also help in relieving back pain. You can practice as pictured with arms outstretched, or arms by your side with shoulders relaxed forward, or making two fists and resting forehead on the fists.

Always remember to breathe …

This photo came up as a memory from 4 years ago today and it reminds me of how different life was back then. We were in lockdown and our lives felt very small and I learned to find joy and be grateful for the small and simple things in life ... like doing yoga and meditating with my cat.

Take a moment now, if you can, to acknowledge and be grateful for a small and simple thing/experience you often take for granted ... take a moment to pause, breathe and express gratitude.

And then perhaps join us in class tonight at Iramoo Community Centre at 7.30pm

Supta Padangusthasana or Reclined Hand To Big Toe Pose is a great pose that stretches the hamstrings, calves and inner thighs. The supine position supports the lower back and keeps the hips and torso in a stable position. It's also a wonderful core strengthening asana that stimulates the abdominal organs, and it can also help in relieving Sciatic pain and arthritis pain in the hips and knees.

Downward Facing Dog OR Adho Mukha Svanasana

Is part arm balance, part inversion, and part restorative pose that simultaneously stretches and strengthens various parts of the body. It stretches the hamstring and calf muscles in the backs of the legs, and builds strength in the arms, shoulders, legs and core.

Talk about getting bang for your buck, what a pose!

Trikonasana or Triangle pose is another favourite of mine, and as a foundational standing pose it is good for almost everything! It strengthens the legs and stretches the groin, hamstrings, and hips, opens the chest and shoulders, while improving balance and stability ... although sometimes I think it should be called star pose, as I feel everything is radiating from the centre making a star shape!!!

We'd love for you to join us on Wednesday night at Iramoo Community Centre at 7.30pm to practice this special pose.

Utkatasana or Chair Pose or Fierce Pose ... whatever you want to call it it's tough ... but oh so good for strengthening the legs and ankles, stretching the chest and shoulders, and stimulating the abdominal organs and heart ... when practicing though, remember to breathe and soften the muscles in your face ...

Urdhva Mukha Svanasana - Upward Facing Dog Pose
Upward-facing dog can strengthen the wrists, arms, and back. Its chest-opening action provides a great antidote to modern life ... (whether that be the dreaded "office slump", or slouching while driving or cooking or chilling out on the lounge) ... when practicing upward facing dog, notice your chest, your lungs, your heart opening and take a big deep breath ... ahhhhh
