Recently one of my professional associations interviewed me for their promotions: I was asked how I came to choose counselling as a career, career highlights. how my faith influences my approach to counselling, how Covid has influenced my practice, and how do I like to chill out on weekends.
We live in such a busy, crowded world where people are pushed around and often overlooked ⦠who has time to sit down and really listen deeply to what people want or need to share?
Many years ago, I benefited from seeing Christian counsellors when I had to move interstate twice in 12 months. I initially knew nobody but these counsellors. I thought this was so helpful for me. I really want to be able to do this for others when they feel alone and overwhelmed.
My name is Robyn Lingard and this is my 13th year in private practice. I have been counselling for 25 years. I am married to David and we have two daughters.
God calls all Christians to try to make our world a better place. With the `big pictureā stuff like international conflicts, I can pray and be informed, but otherwise I cannot influence these outcomes. What I can do is help Australian individuals be more at peace with God, themselves, and one another.
My Masterās research was published internationally in The Family Journal, called Can Couples Find a Silver Lining Amid the Dark Cloud of ME/CFS*: A Pilot Study. I did this under the supervision of CCAA SA founder, Dr John Court. Iāve been excited to see aspects of this research expanded upon by studies in the UK and the US.
Since my Masterās graduation, I have become an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker and a Certified Gottman Therapist. The Gottman Institute is based in Seattle and is among world leaders in research into factors that predict relationship breakup and stable long-term couple relationships and marriages.
I pray for clients and I pray for me. I ask God to help me see people the way He sees them. Often we are helpless. Like sheep gone astray. We are fallen creatures. We're trying our best but weāve become lost and we need God to come and help us.
When I first set up my practice, the website Find a Christian Counsellor was really helpful for me in attracting clients. And over the years Iāve always had wonderful supervisors from CCAA. I am especially grateful for Sue Worzfeld and Dominee Nelson. I also admire and value Rob Salmonās amazing efforts over many years in building CCAA in SA.
I wanted to become a member of Christian Counsellors Association because they help integrate my faith with my therapeutic approach. Plus, I wanted to support them. I think it's very important that we have this professional counselling association for Christians.
Prior to COVID I had never provided any counselling on Zoom whereas now the majority of sessions are on Zoom. When Omicron came to South Australia, everyone had to wear masks. I was never trained to do counselling wearing a mask!
Anxiety levels have definitely increased among clients. Working with people on how to manage COVID is a new area but my prior experience and research into chronic illness has been beneficial.

I love lots of things about nature but especially space and astronomy. It reminds me of the vastness of God ā it just goes on and on and on.
If some free-time beckons, I like to go to Semaphore Beach in SA and just walk along its golden sands with my two fur babies. And I also like reading John Grisham legal thrillers.
