⭐️This week we celebrated one whole year of Eye Care Brisbane!! 🥳⭐️

I’ve been so busy looking after patients the days/weeks/months have just flown and here we are a whole year later!

I’d like to take a minute to thank my patients, colleagues, friends and family for their tremendous support over the last twelve months. It’s been such a pleasure to be able to help so many people with their vision that I can’t wait to see (yes, love a good pun) what the next twelve months holds.

👁 Australian Vision Convention 2022 👁

So I’ve been a little absent from social media due to all the background work that’s gone into helping to organise our annual conference, AVC 2022, that was held over the weekend at the SeaWorld Convention Centre on the Gold Coast.

As the current president of Optometry QLD/NT, I’m so incredibly proud of the efforts of the OQNT staff and my fellow board directors to bring together such an incredible event. It was an absolute blast catching up with old colleagues, meeting many new faces and soaking up all the latest optometry research and developments.

I hope all our delegates (close to 600 between in-person and virtual) enjoyed the experience and I look forward to seeing everyone again at AVC 2023!

👁 Red eyes can be caused by a variety of reasons. In fact, many conditions can actually give a very similar presentation and it’s often the case that the true cause is difficult to identify until the eye is examined with a microscope.

Most optometrists are therapeutically qualified to prescribe eye drops and ointments for the medical treatment of eye conditions. To ensure the right treatment however, you need the right diagnosis. So if you ever develop a red eye(s) be sure to see your optometrist first to help things get back on track.

🦠 There are lots of questions around Covid-19 and contact lens wear now that case numbers are increasing across Queensland.🦠

Here we have summarised some important things to know:

🔹 Yes, it is safe to wear contact lenses as long as you following your regular hygiene and disinfection protocols.
🔹 There is no evidence to suggest that wearing contact lenses increases your chances of contracting Covid-19.
🔹 If you develop symptoms (as with any illness), stop wearing your contact lenses until you’re feeling better and follow public health isolation directives.
🔹 Protect yourself in public by social distancing, wearing a mask and maintaining good hand hygiene practices.

If you have any questions, feel free to shoot us a DM!

Today’s Google logo is in honour of what would be the 108th birthday of Czech chemist, Otto Wichterle, who is best known for the invention of modern soft contact lenses. In 1961 Wichterle produced the first four hydrogel contact lenses, a family of lens materials still used today. So happy birthday to Otto and let’s celebrate 60 years of modern soft contact lenses! 👀🥳

We use anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Yes… what a mouthful! Let’s just call it OCT!) when fitting mini-scleral contact lenses that allows us to customise the fit of the lenses by micrometers (fractions of a millimetre). It’s pretty cool! 🤓

One of my favourite things about being an optometrist is that no two eyeballs are the same. That means there’s even differences between your two eyes! 👀 Sometimes the differences are subtle and sometimes they are extremely obvious (usually due to some sort of eye disease or pathology). It just goes to show we are all unique individuals 😁

So let’s talk about KERATOCONUS 👀

Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea (the transparent tissue on the front of the eye) thins over time. Because the cornea thins, it can’t hold it’s regular spherical shape (like a soccer ball) and ends up distorting with a protruding cone-like bulge. The distortion of the cornea then causes light to scatter as it enters the eye causing objects to appear blurred and distorted.

The signs and symptoms patients most often experience are increasing blurry vision (that glasses don’t seem to help), distortion, haloes/glare around lights and increasing astigmatism in the glasses prescription.

Unfortunately due to the way light travels optically, it’s often the case that glasses alone aren’t enough to provide clear vision, so specialty custom-made contact lenses are usually the best option to improve visual quality.

Our optometrist Marissa, has over ten years experience in fitting these specialty types of contact lenses and managing keratoconus patients. She is also a clinical supervisor and guest lecturer at the QUT School of Optometry, helping to pass on her knowledge of contact lens practice to optometry students.

Give our clinic a call today on 07 3026 2600 to book an assessment with Marissa or email us at info@eyecarebrisbane.com.au.
