So let’s talk about KERATOCONUS 👀
Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea (the transparent tissue on the front of the eye) thins over time. Because the cornea thins, it can’t hold it’s regular spherical shape (like a soccer ball) and ends up distorting with a protruding cone-like bulge. The distortion of the cornea then causes light to scatter as it enters the eye causing objects to appear blurred and distorted.
The signs and symptoms patients most often experience are increasing blurry vision (that glasses don’t seem to help), distortion, haloes/glare around lights and increasing astigmatism in the glasses prescription.
Unfortunately due to the way light travels optically, it’s often the case that glasses alone aren’t enough to provide clear vision, so specialty custom-made contact lenses are usually the best option to improve visual quality.
Our optometrist Marissa, has over ten years experience in fitting these specialty types of contact lenses and managing keratoconus patients. She is also a clinical supervisor and guest lecturer at the QUT School of Optometry, helping to pass on her knowledge of contact lens practice to optometry students.
