Median nerve stimulation induces analgesia via orexin-initiated endocannabinoid disinhibition in the periaqueductal gray.

In brief, this research shows that one of acupuncture point PC6 which runs on median nerve works by activating hypothalamic orexin neurons, orexin leads to reduce pain in the process. In addition, this process doesn't involve opioids. This suggests a promising new strategy for managing pain, especially for patients who are tolerant to opioids/ addicts in the future. While acupuncture itself has been used for thousands of years, this research explains its underlying mechanisms
