Pride. Service. Legacy.

This ANZAC Day, we recognise Shane Wesson, a proud Darkinjung man whose family originates from Kamilaroi Country in Tambar Springs.

Shane served in the Australian Army with the Royal Australian Engineers from 2001 to 2018.

Following in the footsteps of family who served before him, he joined with a strong sense of purpose and respect for those who came before.

As an engineer, his role was demanding and critical.
Clearing minefields, working with explosives, building bridges, and supporting operations on the ground.

One moment that stays with him is visiting Gallipoli while deployed to the Sinai.
Standing where so many served before him, alongside his fellow soldiers.

For Shane, service was about pride and honour.
Wearing the uniform and being part of something bigger than himself.

He speaks of the Army as one team.
No race, no colour. Just the uniform and the people beside you.

He is most proud of his deployment to the Sinai, working alongside multiple countries to help maintain peace between Israel and Egypt.

And of marching on ANZAC Day with his unit.

His story is also one of legacy.

Today, his sons serve in Defence, continuing a five-generation line of service.

This ANZAC Day, we honour his commitment.
We recognise his contribution.

And we acknowledge the ongoing service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Lest We Forget.

Belonging. Service. Pride.

This ANZAC Day, we recognise Michael (Mick) Pittman, a proud Bundjalung man from Casino.

Mick served in the Royal Australian Air Force for 21 years, from 1968 to 1989.

What started as a way to get out of town became a career that took him across Australia and overseas, including Malaysia and the United States.

Working in supply and logistics, he played a key role in supporting operations and keeping things moving.

For Mick, service was about more than the job.
It was about belonging.

He saw strong connections between military life and Aboriginal culture. Structure, respect, community and being part of something bigger.

He rose to the rank of Warrant Officer and was awarded multiple service medals.

But what stands out most is his pride in serving and the sense of unity he found along the way.

This ANZAC Day, we honour his commitment and recognise his contribution.

Lest We Forget.

Service. Strength. Recognition.

This ANZAC Day, we honour Avron Lincoln, originally from Tasmania and now living on Darkinjung Country.

Avron served in the Navy as part of the WRANS from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War.

Inspired by her father, she joined with a strong sense of duty and pride.

Her role supported operations behind the scenes, working across offices, assisting officers and helping those returning from service.

Her time in Darwin stands out. Building connections, finding community and deepening her understanding of her Aboriginal identity.

Like many women at the time, her opportunities were limited. WRANS were not allowed to serve at sea, and much of their contribution went unseen.

For many years, her service was not recognised.

Only recently has she received official acknowledgement. Meaningful, and long overdue.

This ANZAC Day, we honour her service and recognise her contribution.

Lest We Forget.

Honouring Service. Sharing Truth.

This ANZAC Day, we recognise Lindsay Hardy, a proud Bidjara and Gunggari man, honouring the legacy of his great uncles, Fred and Edward Collins.

They served in the 11th Light Horse Regiment as part of the Queensland “Black Watch”, one of the only exclusively Aboriginal units formed within the AIF.

They fought for a country that did not yet recognise them as citizens.

But they still answered the call.

On the battlefield, they found something rare for that time. Equality.
They were judged on their courage, skill and commitment.

Their story is one of strength and resilience.

A reminder that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have always stood up to serve.

This ANZAC Day, we honour their courage and ensure their story is told.

Lest We Forget.
