This week is National Carers Week, a time to recognise, celebrate and raise awareness of the more than 3 million unpaid carers across Australia.
Behind every workplace are people quietly managing far more than we realise.
With one of our own currently working remotely to care for a family member, balancing professional responsibilities with compassion, patience and strength, it's an important reminder that caring often happens out of view, especially among high achievers and neurodivergent team members who may mask exhaustion or stress in their drive to deliver.
Supporting carers at work means more than flexibility. It’s about building a culture of trust, understanding and open communication.
Anyone can become a carer, at any time.
Tips to Support Carers
💚 Check in regularly
A simple message or conversation can remind someone they’re not alone.
💚 Offer a break
Even small acts — covering a meeting, helping reprioritise or offering flexible hours — can make a big difference.
💚 Acknowledge and appreciate
Recognition goes a long way. Thank them for what they bring to both their work and their caring role.
💚 Initiate support
Don’t wait to be asked. Suggest practical help or check if your workplace has wellbeing resources available.
💚 Encourage self-care
Remind carers to take time for themselves, even briefly. Rest and connection matter just as much as care.
🔗➡️ Where Can Carers Get Support?
