Clarence Valley Aboriginal Transition Program

Mudyala Aboriginal Corporation have been working to establish a leading to Year 6 – Year 7 Transition program that supports Aboriginal children and families during primary school and the difficult transition phase.

We are now offering supports for families with children in year 6 and transition to start year 7 in 2025.

WHAT DOES THE BEHAVIOUR MEAN?

All of those “behaviours” that frustrate you are often the child’s way of adapting to the demands placed on them and expressing what they need.

A child who swings in their chair may need movement in order to organise their nervous system or it may support postural activation or it may even help them to organise their vision.

A child who has difficulty starting a task may have difficulty with initiation and/or sequencing of tasks, or they may have difficulty understanding the instructions.

A child who impulsively calls out in class may need some proprioception to ‘turn on’ their ability to pause or they may be making noise in order to regulate the sound in the classroom.

A child who ‘refuses’ to sit with their legs crossed may have postural challenges or may have tension in their legs, hips and back muscles, making this position painful and unsustainable.

And, underlying all behaviour, can be an sub-conscious need to connect.

So the question isn’t, ‘how do I punish this child’, the question is ‘what does this child need?
