Ever wondered what causes the chiropractic subluxation?

(also known as vertebral column dysfunction)

A 2021 review of literature has found that "physical injury, pain, inflammation and acute or chronic physiological or psychological stress all appear capable of altering vertebral column proprioception and thus can influence vertebral column motor control by altering signaling from the deep paraspinal muscles or the central processing of such input"

Deutschmann et al. looked at the impact of chiropractic adjustments on the kicking speed of soccer players.

They found that spinal manipulation of the lumber spine and pelvis increased the kicking speed and performance of the players.

More research is needed in this area but this pilot study is promising!

Another study on sports performance looked at the effects of spinal manipulation and stretching versus just stretching on gold players. Full swing performance was measured between the two groups after 4 weeks of intervention.

It was found that the group that received only stretching as an intervention had no improvement in their swing performance, whereas the group who received chiropractic care plus stretching showed a significant improvement in swing performance.

Can chiropractic reduce the falls risk for the older population?

56 adults aged over 65 participated in a study that measured their falls risk. They were split into control and intervention (chiropractic adjustment) groups. Some things that were measured at the beginning, at 4 and at 12 weeks were:

- Postural stability
-Ankle ‘proprioception’ (i.e. the ability for the brain to know where the joints are in space to be able to provide controlled and adequate movement)
- Multi-sensory integration (i.e. the ability of the brain to manage efficiently multiple stimulus simultaneously, similar to what would happened if you walked upstairs while being on the phone and carrying an object for instance)
- Health related quality of life

The study concluded that the group of individuals who received chiropractic care indicated improved sensorimotor integration and multisensory integration associated with fall risk as well as a statistically significant improvement of quality of life.

This research study is promising since falls account for more than 80% of injury-related hospital admissions in people over 65 years!
