Happy Birthday To our beautiful Hugsy Haily 🎂🎂

Haily has become a favourite to many. At only 6 weeks of age she captured my mums heart & from the time we got her home some 8 months later she was part of our family.

Grateful to this sweet soul for the challenges she gives, the guidance she provides and of course the sweet warm breath she gives you whenever you are close.

A Haily Hug is warming. I recall a 14yo boy receiving one & afterwards he said “so is that what love feels like?”

🌟 Happy Birthday Haily🌟

Anxiety can be debilitating 🫢

Recently I found myself needing to face a difficult situation and it triggered an old pattern of debilitating overwhelm and anxiety.

I won’t lie…..it was consuming!

It was difficult to see through the other side. Despite all my training and my awareness of what was happening it was still hard to pull myself out of 😟

So upon advice of some wise woman in life. I surrendered.

I sat with the uncomfortable feelings and asked myself what I needed!

I allowed my body to do what it needed….I cried and screamed and then worked through using some of my toolkit. I sometimes forget all the resources I have at my fingertips. Tools I wish I was given as a teenager or in my 20’s!

Building Resilience…..

"Resilience" is the process of overcoming, adapting to situations after times of stress, trauma & tragedy.

In essence it means bouncing back from these stressors and adversities. It can also imply growth or advancement to a stronger, better state as a result of overcoming challenges.

Many people I know are struggling with a lack of resilience due to life’s curveballs, which is understandable.

Luckily, we can learn to develop our resilience. Various models exist to help us do this, but I thought I would share some simple tips to help during the tough times:

☀️ Build connections with other people and the world around you. Make positive relationships a priority.

☀️ Manage your thoughts. Catch yourself when negative thoughts creep in, thank them, let them go & reframe the thoughts into something positive.

☀️ Take care of yourself. Develop healthy mental and physical habits.

If we practice during the good times then we are more ready to handle the challenges when they come along.

Even horses that have experienced trauma can learn to develop resilience. Bandit is an example of this. From his explosions due to uncertainty, to his calmness under saddle, it’s taken time, patience & trust but he relies on his people to help him find his way.

Who can you rely on to help support you?

Worry and Anxiety 🤯🧐

During difficult times it is important to try to help find ways to take your mind away from the constant worry which leads to anxiety.

Today’s offering is something you can try yourself and then when you notice you (or your kids) are experiencing worry or anxiety suggest it’s time for the 3x3 game:

1️⃣ Look around you and name three things you see 👀👀🐵- ensuring you take take a breath after each thing you name!

2️⃣ Then, name three sounds you hear🦻🦻🙉. Again ensuring you take a breath after each noticing.

3️⃣ Finally, move three parts of your body - your toes🦶🏼, fingers 🖐🏻, or arm💪🏻.

Whenever you feel your brain going 100 miles per hour, this mental trick can help center your mind, bringing you back to the present moment & back into your body.

My other suggestion is to take yourself outside away from the constraints of inside to breath in fresh air and make the most of nature around you 🌱🌳🌻🌤

Let me know 3 things your noticed when you stopped and look around 🐴💜

Let me tell me a story about how the horses and I have “saved” a young girls life….

There was once a young lady that was in and out of hospitals for suicidal ideation.

She had been in and out of psychiatric units and therapy for many years and at 17yo she felt it was hopeless to ever feel hopeful to have a somewhat “normal” life, with curiosity, connection and belonging.

An organisation sent her for 10 sessions for Equine Assisted Therapy. The psychotherapist was one who was trauma trained with her own lived experience, who had a lot of tools in her tool belt.

During the first session the client confessed she felt it was hopeless and this would just be another therapist who would give up on her……

After those initial 10 sessions the young lady finally felt someone was listening to her and working WITH her to help and not just going through the motions.

Fast forward 18months, after lots of quality horsey time and therapist time, the young lady turned 19yo and found herself now confident enough to book a trip to another continent to be with extended family without worrying about being admitted back to hospital.

During this 18months she had learnt:
- reasons behind her suicidal thoughts
- How to bring herself out of hypo-arousal
- How to process and integrate trauma
- To let go of the victim mode
- to control the negative self-talk
- To empower herself
- Tools for overwhelm & anxiety
- Self-awareness of her triggers
- How to set boundaries
- awareness of limitations

Despite the fact she moved continents she was aware that things weren’t “fixed” and she committed to remote horsey sessions to keep her on track and grounded during her year abroad!

She came home & resumed monthly sessions which gradually reduced over time. She still comes for top ups but is now in a good place & able to reach out when in need.

How old is too old for a horse to do this work?

I often have people blown away that this girl is around 45yo.

Candy has been in the family for over 35yrs.

She was very much my mums horse and not overly interested in people.

But about 5 years ago a client asked if she could brush Candy, I said she could try but we wouldn’t be using a halter as she hates them.

Fast forward to now….this old girl seeks out scratches and brushes from people (though she is selective to who she gives her time too).

It’s been amazing watching her and how she teaches the kids you need to be super calm and slow when approaching her.

Even after 2 teeth out last week (there isn’t many left), I questioned the vet should we think about saying “good-bye”. Her response “with that attitude and will to lie she will put live us all” 😍. I’m sure that won’t be the case but I’m grateful we are making it through another winter 💜

Love this old girl 🥰🥰🥰🥰
