Today is World Asthma Day.

And the theme for this year highlights an urgent need - everyone aged 12 and over with asthma should have access to anti-inflammatory inhalers. Because asthma isn’t just symptoms, it’s inflammation in the lungs.

Treating that inflammation – by using an anti-inflammatory reliever instead of just a blue puffer for people aged 12 and over – can help reduce the risk of serious flare-ups and asthma attacks.

You can find out more information about anti-inflammatory relievers by visiting Asthma Australia’s website at https://asthma.org.au/medicines/anti-inflammatory-relievers/

And here are some simple tips to help keep symptoms under control:

💊 Take your asthma medication as prescribed.
🍃 Know your triggers (such as cold air, smoke, dust or pollen) and try to avoid them.
🫁 Carry your reliever (puffer) with you at all times.
📄 Have an up to date Asthma Action Plan.
🩺 See your GP regularly to review your asthma management.

May we talk?

It’s a simple question and it’s one that we’re encouraging you to ask your colleagues this month.

We know there’s a lot going on in the world right now - from global conflicts to economic uncertainty to cost of living pressures - and for many of us, it’s taking a toll.

As we continue to go about our daily lives, we carry on with our work and often stifle the burden of how we’re feeling, particularly if we might be feeling a bit down.

Throughout the month of May, we’re working towards changing that.

If you notice changes in someone’s behaviour, or that they might be struggling, ask them if they’d like to talk.

A simple check in can make a big difference and it shows you care.

You don’t have to all the answers - sometimes listening is enough.

And for many, the chance to simply talk about how they’re feeling with someone they know can help in easing the stress of all the other pressures that may be going on in their lives.

So this month, commit to asking ‘May we talk?'

We’re mid-way through April and the days are getting shorter and cooler, particularly the mornings and evenings.

And the change in temperature also means we’re heading into cold and flu season.

Now is the perfect time to give your immune system a little extra support to ensure it’s fighting fit for the months ahead.

Consider these simple tips to make sure your immune system is winter-ready:

😴 Prioritise good sleep. Your immune system loves rest - aim for a solid seven to nine hours a night and your immune system will thank you for it.

🥗 Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Proper nutrition supports the production of antibodies, strengthens the gut microbiome and reduces inflammation, all of which help to ward off common bugs.

🚶 Stay active to keep your body strong. Exercise increases the circulation of critical white blood cells, allowing them to patrol the body more effectively.

🧊 Stay hydrated (even when it’s cold). Proper hydration transports nutrients and oxygen to cells and supports the flushing of toxins from the body.

🧴Wash hands regularly and practise good hygiene. Hand washing removes viruses and bacteria before they can enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth.
