Heatwave Warning – Stay Cool, Stay Safe

Extreme heat is dangerous — and it kills more Australians than any other natural disaster.

Heat can affect anyone, but those most at risk include:
• Older people (65+)
• Babies and young children
• Pregnant women
• People with chronic or acute health conditions
• People who are socially isolated

Severe heat can cause heat exhaustion and heatstroke, trigger heart attacks or strokes, and worsen conditions such as kidney or lung disease.

Protect yourself and others by taking simple steps:
✔ Stay cool – use air conditioning or fans, close blinds, wear light clothing
✔ Stay hydrated – drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
✔ Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day
✔ Check in on family, friends, neighbours and anyone living alone
✔ Spend time in cool places like shopping centres or libraries if needed

Know the warning signs and act early — heat-related illness can escalate quickly.

If you need medical advice or someone is unwell:
📞 Nurse-on-Call: 1300 60 60 24 (24-hour health advice)
🏥 See your GP or access Virtual Emergency Care for non-life-threatening concerns

🚨 In an emergency, always call Triple Zero (000).

With UV levels high across our region, it’s important to take steps to protect your skin while enjoying time outdoors.

Remember to slip on protective clothing, slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on sunglasses—especially during peak UV hours. Sun protection helps reduce the risk of skin cancer and keeps you safe while staying active.

Look after yourself and those around you by making SunSmart choices every day.

As we enjoy the warmer weather and holiday period, we encourage everyone to take care while spending time outdoors and being active.

Whether you are swimming, boating, fishing, or relaxing by the lake, river, or pool, a few simple precautions can make all the difference—supervise children closely, wear appropriate safety equipment, stay hydrated, and know your limits.

Looking out for one another helps keep our community safe, healthy, and able to enjoy all that summer has to offer.

From all of us at Yarrawonga Health, we’d like to wish our community a very Merry Christmas.

Whether you’re enjoying a well-earned break, hosting the family lunch, or trying not to overdo it on the pavlova, we hope the festive season brings moments of rest, laughter, and connection.

To those in our care over Christmas, and to our staff and volunteers who will be working while others celebrate, thank you. Your care, commitment, and good humour (even on night shift) do not go unnoticed.

Please take care on the roads, look after one another, and remember we’re here if you need us.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy Christmas from the Yarrawonga Health team.

Extreme Heat Warning – Northern Region

Severe heatwaves can be dangerous, particularly for older people, babies and young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and people with medical conditions or who are unwell.
To stay safe during extreme heat:
Seek a cool place such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
Close windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep heat out of your home.
Use fans or air-conditioning where available to help keep cool.
Check in on family members, friends and neighbours who may be more vulnerable in hot weather.

Celebrating World Diabetes Day (November 14)

This World Diabetes Day, we celebrated the inspiring journeys of Rita Greco, Kim Barron, and David Holdsworth, three residents who have been living well with Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years.
Rita enjoys the freedom of modern glucose monitoring, no longer needing to prick her fingers, while David embraces life fully, staying active and never letting diabetes hold him back. Kim loves sharing her knowledge with others, explaining that Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are like a car and a motorbike – both get you where you need to go, but in very different ways.

Thanks to Siobhan from Yarrawonga Health and the Yarrawonga-Mulwala T1PS (Type 1 Peer Support) Group, the Kellion Victory Medal dinner was a wonderful celebration of their achievements, resilience, and the power of support and community.
