Full circle

Visited my old village yesterday to collect a classic old metters stove.
Also took the time to go see our old farm.

This stove was used in my old cabin before taking her out and putting in a rayburn which had a hot water jacket.
That was in late 1997

Nearly thirty years later i have her being readied to put into new cabin.
These old fireplaces are an aussie classic and will be an amazing addition to the The Bush Camp life.

Also grabbed an old metters chippy water heater which will be used to heat bathtub.
Hoping to have it all installed in next couple weeks and given how things are looking out there in this silly world not a minute too soon!

Being present

Things feel different when you swap out “I have to” with “I get to”.
Perspective matters, a lot!
Tomorrow is like the horizon that you cannot get to today no matter how hard you try or fast you walk. And when you feel like you are almost there it’s over there again?
Tomorrows are like that. Tomorrow becomes today and there is another tomorrow to reach for.
Being present is as simple as immersing yourself in the now. Really absorbing the moment.
The campfire is such a teacher in this regard.
To just sit, stare, wonder and appreciate the moment you are in is such a gift.

Seeking discomfort

As we go into 2026 lets think about how far we have come as a species.
All the trappings.
Roof over our heads, a vehicle to get us from A to B. Maybe even more than one.
Shops to buy whatever we may need and many screens to prevent us from being bored.
The irony that one of the biggest and fastest growing social trends around the Western world at this time in history is ‘minimalism’.

Discarding household items, giving away our extra garments, tools, furniture and excess ‘stuff’. Learning to live with less to avoid being owned by the ‘things’ we own.
Swapping out these items for more space and more importantly more time.

The photo of the drum was our toy car growing up on my Grandparents farm.
The pic of the man and dog my Great Grandfather reading poetry in the woodshop on break at work.
The pic of me lighting the chip heater bath on our old farm many years ago as it was the only hot water we had.
Simple things giving joy.

The other leading trend atm is ‘Seeking Discomfort’. Purposely finding ways to escape the comforts we have fought for over many years in order to re learn how to appreciate them.
What would joy feel like without sorrow?
Health without physical pain?
Money without going without?
Love without loss?

This year lets appreciate things ,ourselves and each other just a little more. It’s the simple things in the end that will matter most. A fireside chat, sleeping rough under the stars and a simple meal over the fire.

The Bush Camp is about just that.
“A quiet space in a noisy world” where a little discomfort can remind us of how far we have come and where we need to go.

Peace

In the not too distant future I will start my transition to cabin life.
The world is too fast for this old fella and I crave the quiet life. The wind down has truly begun.
Those who mind don’t matter
Those that matter won’t mind
People who know me and love me will know where to find me. We will cook with cast iron, listen to each others stories and stare into the fire.

Finally got to get some chores done at The Bush Camp. I have been struggling with knee and back injuries so needed to take my foot off the gas for a week.
Striking the balance of work, rest and play is always a challenge. It’s easy to forget to be kind to yourself and this becomes even more important as the years go by.
At 61 Im still going pretty bloody hard physically and enjoying the challenge but we need to read the signs of burnout. Both physical and emotional.
I am setting up this ‘quiet space in a noisy world’ so that myself, my family and my friends will have somewhere to sit fireside, enjoy the views, the silence and take some time to just relax.
Almost there!

Mowing, planting out bulbs and clearing the way for the final stages of the build.
Feeling motivated
Staying grateful

Grow it
Store it
Bake it

The sound of a kettle ‘hissing’ on an old wood stove. The smell of a fresh baked bread and the taste of homemade jams, pickles and sauce!
These skills are in fast decline as we head into the so called ‘New World’.
Modern life with all its creature comforts and conveniences has left us vulnerable, stressed and separated.
For 20 years we lived a simple life and now that I am living and working back in the society I slipped out from I can see why I took that leap many years ago.
Don’t get me wrong it’s a good life. Great job as a youth worker, beautiful house in one of the best little towns in the mountains and a place The Bush Camp to escape the rat race. however something yearns in me?
I don’t want to forget the simple life. I want to pass on my knowledge of how to grow food, bake bread, store and preserve what we grow. I want to help others to realise there is more and if you sit fireside even just for a few nights you will realise how shallow we breathe, how fast we move and how precious time and presence truly are.
You can have both and that balance is a hard one to achieve.

In the next chapter of the ever evolving The Bush Camp story we will be looking into how I will set up my campfire sessions.

It’s important to not get too carried away with trying to achieve too much too soon.
In keeping things authentic I really need to keep a check on the ‘intentions’ of what we want from these gatherings.

Most of the time less is more.
There are a lot of great groups popping up and I believe we are at a super important crossroad in our collective evolution.

Back to basics and what we know works.
Immersing ourselves in nature, eating well, sitting fireside and sharing stories.

The Bush Camp
A quiet space in a noisy world

Stop the world I want to get off

The world is changing. Fast!
I grew up in th 70s, 80s and 90s and the world in 2025 seems light years away.

Artificial intelligence, cost of ‘living’ and phones have us so distracted and ill equipped to see the blatant obvious.
We have lost our way, our connection to nature, seasons and each other.
It is only when I am out in nature that I realise everything is as it was and has always been.
The rustle of leaves, birdsong, sunshine and rain.

THE NOISE

Be quiet now, seek silence as it listens and it speaks
Of the past and our future it knows the way, of the now it sits in forever
The noise it shares not to give, but to take, not to know but to tell
Beware the noise that comes to distract and disturb your once untethered soul.
A thief in the night and a teller of lies who betrays your ears and troubles your eyes

Being prepared?
I have always had a fascination with growing, storing and preserving food.
My Mum the same and her Mother before.
As a child I spent loads of time on my Grandmas farm watching and learning how to be ready for tough times.
Solar flares, depressions, global events, war and famine have all played a part in peoples awareness around being ready should the SHTF

I believe that schools and leaders should be helping people to become self reliant and ready if things should suddenly change and if history tells us anything they will.
How many people know how to grow food, hunt, find water and shelter?

As these times are now unfolding it’s alarming how dependant on technology, food supply and energy availability we have become.
I have spent many years teaching young people how to grow food, start Community gardens and do it sustainably with minimal chemical inputs.
We need to push our leaders, teachers and local representatives to include these activities in the curriculum and make it part of our young peoples lives.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

It’s the little things…..
Cutting my own firewood from my own timber, pushups, old bottles of red given by good friends and beautiful landscapes!
With all thats going on in this world that we have no control over don’t forget that you have the ability no the right to slow down and enjoy lifes little gifts
At The Bush Camp we will sit fireside and remind each other that each day is a gift and a privilege denied to many
Enjoy
