The Bush Camp
A quiet space in a noisy world

Stop the world I want to get off

The world is changing. Fast!
I grew up in th 70s, 80s and 90s and the world in 2025 seems light years away.

Artificial intelligence, cost of ‘living’ and phones have us so distracted and ill equipped to see the blatant obvious.
We have lost our way, our connection to nature, seasons and each other.
It is only when I am out in nature that I realise everything is as it was and has always been.
The rustle of leaves, birdsong, sunshine and rain.

THE NOISE

Be quiet now, seek silence as it listens and it speaks
Of the past and our future it knows the way, of the now it sits in forever
The noise it shares not to give, but to take, not to know but to tell
Beware the noise that comes to distract and disturb your once untethered soul.
A thief in the night and a teller of lies who betrays your ears and troubles your eyes

Being prepared?
I have always had a fascination with growing, storing and preserving food.
My Mum the same and her Mother before.
As a child I spent loads of time on my Grandmas farm watching and learning how to be ready for tough times.
Solar flares, depressions, global events, war and famine have all played a part in peoples awareness around being ready should the SHTF

I believe that schools and leaders should be helping people to become self reliant and ready if things should suddenly change and if history tells us anything they will.
How many people know how to grow food, hunt, find water and shelter?

As these times are now unfolding it’s alarming how dependant on technology, food supply and energy availability we have become.
I have spent many years teaching young people how to grow food, start Community gardens and do it sustainably with minimal chemical inputs.
We need to push our leaders, teachers and local representatives to include these activities in the curriculum and make it part of our young peoples lives.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!
Peace

It’s the little things…..
Cutting my own firewood from my own timber, pushups, old bottles of red given by good friends and beautiful landscapes!
With all thats going on in this world that we have no control over don’t forget that you have the ability no the right to slow down and enjoy lifes little gifts
At The Bush Camp we will sit fireside and remind each other that each day is a gift and a privilege denied to many
Enjoy

Autumn
Living in the New England certainly has it’s benifits. Autumn colours, cool days and the best we almost never have hot nights.
Living at such elevation has it’s challenges when it comes to what we grow and when we can grow it. Shorter warmer months means things need to be planned well ahead if one wants to grow summer vegies.
I have spent many years teaching, growing and enjoying the benifits of growing and eating fresh, organic and sustainably grown produce. Fresh is best!
The price of food atm is through the roof and I for one look forward to sharing my knowledge and time to help others grow as much homegrown fruit, herbs and vegetables as they can. The health benifits are well known.
Just one of the chatpoints to enjoy around the fire at The Bush Camp

One of the key deciding factors of taking the plunge ( pun intended) to buy and set up a remote wilderness retreat was the water.

Spring fed crystal clear ancient waterholes, and a river that you can drink from, swim in and pan for gemstones and gold.
Who’s coming for a dip next summer?

My Grandparents farm where I spent a lot of time during school holidays.
On the York Peninsular South Australia it was a wonderful escape from the city where everything was moving so fast.
Where would I be now if I had not had the opportunity to get the peace and quiet this beautiful old farm gave me?
During my lets say less focussed years when things were different it was here my mind wandered to.
The feelings of contentment and wonder never left me and I vowed I would return to the country.
Time to help others find that same inner peace and sense of wonder at The Bush Camp
Many years later I give thanks 🙏

Full circle

This is not my first rodeo
For over two decades we lived the offgrid life. Grew our own food, relied on the sun for our power, cooked by fire and enjoyed a quiet and peaceful environment.
In 2017 I decided to sell the land and go find a new beginning. At that stage I was working as a Fathers support worker and a youth worker in the Manning as I was running out of steam to keep up with the pace growing food and keeping the farm organically certified.
I moved to Walcha and started working with disadvantaged youth in Armidale.
After years working in a residential program at one of the best youthworks organisations going again I found myself struggling to keep up at the ripe old age of 60.
I have spent the previous year building a cabin in the wild rivers NP around Yarrowitch and now that it is nearing completion the urge to spend more time around the firepit and amongst the trees and wildlife has taken over.
To combine my love of solitude, campoven cooking and helping people to get through tough times is something that has happened quite organically.
The taoist saying of Wu Wei (to not force, or action via inaction) comes to mind here.
I have created something quite special in one of the most stunning and remote areas going. Amazing crystal clear running waterholes, a river and surrounded by National Parks this place The Bush Camp is evolving well but needs me to commit.
Next year will be next level

Antique baltic pine flooring pulled from a factory in Maitland. 140 years old and now part of the flooring The Bush Camp.
Should come up a treat once we fill old nail holes and imperfections with black filler and then oil.
Always wanted to have a slate/ timber floor. Nearly there

Love and loss

Everyone at some point will experience losing someone they love. Family, friends or work mates at the end of the day we all get to say goodbye.
When I lost my best friend several years ago it shook me more than i let on or care to admit. Of course I knew it would but the level of grief, sadness and shock was next level. However something else happened after. I felt like I had been given a gift. Like everything after was a bonus because if i could handle that then clearly I can handle anything!
Years down the track I am struck by the strength some friends of mine are displaying in their quest to get well after some tough times. We ride together, chat about life, our kids and what we believe this life we have means. We listen and learn from each other as we have all had our fair share of loss.
Sometimes all we need is some quiet space in a noisy world to just sit with our grief. The sedona method says we must welcome our emotions both good and bad. Sit within it.
I’m looking forward to helping others to find their inner strength and learn to accept the things we cannot change but change the things we cannot accept.
On we go
Stay tuned
Peace
