I know we don't talk about antibiotics in First Aid Training however this is fascinating. 40 million people are predicted to die over the next 25 years due to antibiotic resistance. The earths population rose significantly since 1928 when Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin growth in a mere petri dish. It has taken nearly 100 years for bacteria to evolve itself to survive.

The thing I always teach in First Aid is prevention is better than cure and safety is above all else to avoid mere accidents.

Our skin in the best barrier to prevent these mighty bugs getting in.
So protect it as best you can and avoid any skin breakages.

Alcohol consumption and the affects of it isn't something that we train in first aid courses, however I have read some interesting reports on it lately. How it affects us as we get older, how it affects us as women and men and what it does to our body at an intracellular level. Basically, you are better off not drinking it at all. I have never been a 'drinker' but have certainly had some pretty good social binges that I have then suffered for the next few days, even weeks. Did I feel better for it? Did my skin suffer? Did my brain fog worsen?
It is alarming how accessible it is now in society. There is a bottle shop on nearly every corner and 'cheaper' chains that sell 'cheap' bottles of spirits, for example, $10 bottles of vodka.
These shops are more accessible than a whole foods shop, which you need a microscope to find... and will never find one in rural Queensland, but, bet you can find more than one liquor store.

An ESMO session highlights the well-known links between alcohol consumption and cancer and calls on healthcare professionals to do more to raise awareness among patients.

We now stock QUIKCLOT!! If there is ever an accident and there is major bleeding and you can't stop it, this stuff stops traumatic bleeding 👌
It has to be added to your first aid kit. It's a lovely little addition for peace of mind, especially if you are remote, or a long way from help, so that if a traumatic accident occurs you have the latest technology to help your casualty before the ambulance, rescue helicopter or flying doctor arrives.

Some amazing news from front line research done here in Queensland at our very own UQ. Venom from some of our deadliest snakes will hopefully soon be seen in first aid kits as an immediate anti-coagulant for urgent application in bleeding control! Can't wait to see the new product and what a great initiative from yet another great research project from one of our Universities.

Some of the world's deadliest snakes could soon be saving lives, with research from The University of Queensland showing venom could be used to stop uncontrolled bleeding.

This picture is an accurate depiction of how we live today due to the sacrifice our ANZACS made. Grandad fought in WWII in Guinea and Borneo and always said that of they didn't keep the J**s out we wouldn't have survived. None of us, not the indigenous or non-indigenous. Their life, mental and physical sacrifice should never be forgotten. Lest we forget!
