Right, what’s gonna happen next?
This is what happened yesterday at The Creek Sessions in Yeppoon as Artist in Residence.
What an interesting process. 3 hours to splatter the canvas (I used phalo blue watercolour paint, very situated in water).
Then I realised it needed the sun to help to dry quickly, so I carefully carried it out, with the help of another woman.
Need some paper towels to blot up the puddles. Lucky I was prepared.
Once those puddles were absorbed into the paper, it was dry enough to stand it up on the easle.
Ok what is it? What can I see? No pressure! I turned it several times. There’s a face. Always faces. There’s a body. Ok it goes this way. There were a few splatters that got painted over.
My first thought was to start giving the characters I saw some colour. I have a good beige ready to go which satisfied my left brain realist but as I loaded my brush, I changed my thoughts to use this colour to find the negative spaces.
Next step, find the edges with my sharpies. There were all these other shapes & angles that took that sharpie on an adventure. I don’t know what I’m doing, I’m just allowing myself to follow what’s there with no expectations.
I know I only have 3 hours & this is only the beginning of something potentially amazing.
And so I start dripping more paint in various colours down the canvas. Haha. It doesn’t matter. Look, now they’re all in jail. Not sure if I’m happy with that. But it doesn’t matter. I can change anything I don’t like. I am free.
