🔴It's National Pain Week - let's talk Period Pain! 🔴

An often normalised pain women can experience is period pain (usually just prior or during bleeding, but it can even strike mid-cycle around ovulation too!)

Whilst period pain is common, it shouldn’t interfere with your life...

Let’s break it down:

What’s normal?

✅ Mild cramping during the first 1–2 days of bleeding, easily managed with simple pain relief medication or heat
✅ Mild one-sided cramping during ovulation lasting no more than a day
✅ Mild abdominal bloating.

What’s NOT normal?

❌ Pain that disrupts work, school, or daily activities
❌ Needing heavy or continuous pain medication
❌ Vomiting, nausea, or loss of consciousness from pain
❌ Emergency department visits.

If your period pain falls into the “not normal” category, we can usually help!

Pelvic health physiotherapy works to equip you with a variety of tools and strategies to improve your period pain. This might include relaxation exercises and pelvic floor down-training, using TENS for pain relief, and learning to reduce systemic inflammation and triggers.

Everyone's pain management "toolkit" looks a little different!

Are you guilty of these "Bad Bladder Habits"?

Let's chat about three of the most common bladder behaviours that might be messing with your bladder's mojo!

1. "Just in case" wees

When you empty your bladder frequently more for convenience rather than with a genuine urge, you COULD be teaching your bladder to hold less urine! (Pro tip: you might not need to wee every time you leave the house!)

Try aiming for building up to waiting 2-3 hours between toilet trips if possible.

2. Rushing a wee

We get it. Life is busy and sometimes having to wee is just an inconvenience! BUT if we rush a wee by trying to 'push' it out instead of consciously relaxing, this can lead to issues such as bladder irritation, pelvic floor weakening, and dribbling on the toilet seat as you stand.

Slow down, take your time, breathe deeply and give your bladder a chance to fully empty.

3. Hovering over public toilets
This one is a big no no, especially if you already have bladder issues! When we hover we are unable to fully relax our pelvic floor muscles to empty. This can cause incomplete emptying and potentially contribute to urinary tract infections.

For the germophobes, instead place toilet paper on the seat if you must, or try to carry wipes or disposable toilet seat covers with you.

(Bonus tip: stop "stopping the flow" as your means of doing pelvic floor exercises! It's great as a once-off test to make sure you can do it, but done repeatedly it can contribute to incomplete bladder emptying. Practice that same feeling for your exercises, but not while you wee!)

Be sure to check in with a pelvic health physio if you're struggling to break any bladder habits or if you believe your bladder isn't behaving as it should.

We'd love to help :)

🧐Are you a health, wellness or fitness professional working with women or men with Pelvic Pain??🧐

Due to its complexity, it's REALLY important that those with pelvic pain have confidence their care team have a solid knowledge of best practices - and know who else to refer to when they can't completely meet their treatment needs.

The Queensland Pelvic Pain Network is inviting all local Rocky/Yeppoon health professionals passionate about pelvic pain to join up for some networking!

Meet up after work 6.30pm at Headricks Lane on Thurs 29th May - nibbles care of QPPN.

RSVP below (it's free) - tell your friends/doctors/health professionals x

Congratulations Cat on completing your lymphoedema practitioner training🎉🎉🎉

But what is lymphoedema?
It's a chronic condition where excessive lymph fluid accumulates and causes swelling, usually affecting the limbs (but it may also include the trunk, breast, or ge***al region). Lymphoedema is a common side effect of cancer treatments including surgery and radiation.

Cat can assist you along your treatment journey with:
- Pre-operative assessment and education for breast cancer, gynae, bowel and prostate cancer
- Post-operative follow-up and risk screening for lymphoedema
- Advice on "safe return to exercise and physical activity" following cancer treatment
- Lymphatic drainage massage
- Exercise prescription to promote lymphatic flow
- Compression garment prescription and advice
- Management of lymphoedema secondary to reduced mobility.

No referral is needed to book - however DVA, NDIS and Medicare referrals are accepted. Cat is available for appointments in our Rocky, Yeppoon and Biloela clinics.

Get in touch with the Pelvic Fix team today to find out more at pelvicfixphysio.com or 07 4808 2779.

🎉 What to expect at your first pelvic health physio appointment 🎉

If you're new around here, have you been wondering what happens during an initial physiotherapy consultation with us?

Let’s break it down, so you feel prepared and empowered from the get-go ✨ Here's what you can expect:

1️⃣ Your Story, Your Journey!

We’re all ears! 🤗 We'll kick things off by getting to know you and your unique concerns. What’s been bothering you? What goals do you have? Expect a chat about your medical history, bladder & bowel habits, sleep, stress levels, exercise, diet... and more!

2️⃣ Assessing your needs (if you’re comfortable!)

Depending on how you’re feeling, what our priorities are, and how much time we have, we might do a physical assessment. This could include a pelvic floor muscle assessment. You can choose between a non-invasive abdominal ultrasound of your bladder and pelvic floor, or an internal muscle check—it’s completely up to you! We'll talk you through all the options.

3️⃣ Together, we make an Action Plan

With all the info we’ve gathered, we’ll collaborate to figure out what’s causing your concerns and come up with the best treatment plan to help you reach your goals. You will get some actionable tips to get started (usually including some pelvic floor training!) and we'll plan out the next few sessions. Remember, you never have to do anything that doesn’t feel right for you! 🌟

👗 What to Wear?
Comfort is key! Think stretchy, comfy clothes that let you move easily (maybe leave the jeans at home 😉)

📝 What to Bring?
- Any medical or scan reports 📄
- A list of past surgeries and current meds 💊
- Referral info (Medicare, NDIS, DVA) 🏥
- Private health insurance card (if applicable) 💳
- A water bottle (we do a lot of talking!)

⏰ How long will it take?
Your first session is around 60 minutes (we want plenty of time to get all the information we need!). After that, follow-up visits are usually 30-45 minutes.

Got questions or feeling a bit unsure? DM us! We're here for you every step of the way.

Let's take control of your pelvic health together! 💖

🚨Are your bowel habits causing your bladder problems??🚨

Did you know that constipation can affect your bladder, too?
(Especially in kids - as their pelvises are so small, there's not much space left for their bladder to fill if their bowel is overloaded!)

Constipation can often lead to bladder symptoms like urgency, frequency, leaks, and difficulty emptying fully.

If you're struggling with these symptoms, it's time to address the root cause!

At Pelvic Fix Physiotherapy, our expert team can guide you through personalised treatment options to ease both bowel and bladder issues.

Don't suffer in silence—get the support you deserve today✨

💩 It’s IBS Awareness Month 💨

If you're one of the millions dealing with bloating, discomfort, or unpredictable bathroom trips, you're not alone.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is considered a functional gastrointestinal problem, but it isn’t just a tummy issue – it can impact your entire life. From the constant worry about finding the nearest bathroom, to avoiding social gatherings or eating seemingly "normal" foods because you're afraid of triggering a flare-up, it can certainly feel isolating and limit your freedom.

But here's the good news: as pelvic health physiotherapists, we specialise in helping people manage their health holistically, which is key to managing IBS symptoms. Did you know that IBS isn't just about your gut? It’s actually classified as a disorder of gut-brain interaction. Think of it as a two-way communication highway between your brain and digestive tract, controlling everything from bowel movements to gastrointestinal pain. Any miscommunication along that highway can worsen your symptoms.

We take a "whole person" approach to treatment, focusing on pelvic floor conditioning, diet, hydration, stress management, sleep, exercise, and more! By addressing all these factors, we give you the best chance at improving your IBS symptoms.

If IBS feels like it's taking over your life, remember: You don’t have to face it alone. Let’s chat about how physiotherapy can help you regain control and get back to feeling like yourself again 🤸‍♀️
