What’s the Difference Between a Nasal Spray and a Nasal Decongestant?

Blocked nose? You’re not alone - but knowing which nasal treatment to choose can make a big difference in how quickly you feel better. Here's a breakdown of the two main options:

Nasal Sprays (Saline-based)
• 💧 What it does: Moisturises and clears out mucus, allergens, and irritants from the nose.
• 👶 Gentle enough for: Children and everyday use.
• 📆 Frequency: Safe for regular use — no risk of dependency.
• 🌿 Best for: Allergies, dry nasal passages, and mild congestion.

Nasal Decongestant Sprays
• 🔓 What it does: Shrinks swollen blood vessels to quickly relieve nasal congestion.
• 💥 Fast relief for: Colds, sinus infections, or allergies causing severe blockage.
• ⚠️ Use with care: Should only be used for a few days to avoid rebound congestion.
• ⏱ Short-term use only: Usually recommended for 3–5 days.

Chocolate & Oat Banana Bread

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups organic spelt flour
1/3 cup organic cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp bi-carb soda
1/2 cup organic rolled oats, plus extra for decorating
1/3 cup organic maple syrup
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
1/3 cup organic olive oil or macadamia oil
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup mashed ripe banana
1/2 cup natural yoghurt
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Method
Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan-forced. Line the base of a loaf pan with baking paper.
Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder and bi-carb soda into a large bowl. Add oats and stir to combine. Make a well in the centre.
Whisk maple syrup, milk, lemon juice, oil, eggs and vanilla in a separate jug.
Gently pour egg mixture into the flour well along with mashed banana, yoghurt and nuts. Stir until just combined.
Pour the mixture into the loaf pan and top with a sprinkle of oats.
Bake for 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin before serving.
