When is a Shoulder MRI Indicated?
Persistent shoulder pain is not always caused by simple strain. When symptoms continue or specific clinical signs are present, physicians may recommend an MRI of the shoulder to obtain detailed images of the joint, muscles, tendons, and surrounding soft tissues.
A shoulder MRI is commonly indicated when patients present with:
• Suspected rotator cuff tears
• Labral injuries (such as SLAP lesions)
• Chronic shoulder instability or dislocations
• Persistent pain lasting more than 4–6 weeks despite treatment
• Limited range of motion or unexplained weakness
• Suspected tendon, ligament, or cartilage damage
• Evaluation before or after orthopedic surgery
• Assessment of inflammation, bursitis, or joint degeneration
An MRI provides high-resolution images of soft tissues, allowing physicians to accurately diagnose conditions affecting the tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles of the shoulder joint.
Early and precise diagnosis supports targeted treatment planning, whether conservative management, physical therapy, or surgical intervention.
If shoulder pain is persistent or worsening, consult your physician to determine whether advanced imaging such as MRI is appropriate.
