Naftalan oil is a thick, black-brown liquid which has a specific aromatic odor. Its first use as a remedy dates back to the 12th century. The first accounts of the Naftalan oil is claimed to have been made by Marco Polo in the 13th century. In his travel accounts he mentioned magical therapeutic oil he had heard about in the area of today’s Azerbaijan. Over the years, Naftalan has gained fame for its healing properties. The main active components of Naftalan oil are Naftene hydrocarbons that have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, vasodilator, antiallergic properties which stimulate trophic functions, increase metabolism, stimulate spermatogenesis, and accelerate ovulation and ovogenesis. Naftalan oil is effectively used for treatment of joint, gynecological, urological, skin and otorhinolaryngological diseases. Furthermore, it is used in the treatment of diseases of periarticular soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system and peripheral veins. There is a unique museum in Naftalan; The Crutch Museum. The displayed items of the museum are crutches that have been abandoned by patients who once needed them until they underwent therapy in Naftalan. The museum opened in 1978.
