Now that it is established that we have community spread of COVID 19, it is critical that we all follow the established WHO and local protocols. I have been hearing and seeing an increase in mental health issues. If anyone needs to talk, I am here.

It´s not too late to say Happy New Year. Again if recent local COVID issues are making you anxious, do not hesitate to call. Stay safe, observe all of the protocols and continue to sanitize, distance and abide by the rules. ;) Barbados will be fine, this requires patience.

There are people who find it difficult to get through the Holidays. Please check on your relatives, that one relative who appears a bit of a loner and even the "class clown". This has been a difficult year and is likely to difficult next year. Be kind to others. Invite someone over in your "bubble" and stay safe, Merry Christmas.
It’s known as 'The Most Wonderful Time of the Year' but for many, including Kyle, it’s filled with anxiety and depression.

Christmas can be difficult for many and COVID has not made it any easier. If you are feeling overwhelmed, speak to someone. If your are in a crisis or feel suicidal, go to an Emergency room immediately. You are worth it. Others, please check up on elderly relatives, people are social animals, we need to connect safely. Be kind.
For many, depression is a daily struggle so it stands to reason that you might have to cope with depression on Christmas Day. We offer some tips on coping with depression during the festive season.

As cases of covid rise exponentially across the world, please be mindful that it can happen here. Observe all the necessary protocols and stay safe. Hand hygiene is by far the most effective way to stay safe along with distance. Wear your mask in public spaces indoors.

Mine is a long history in care-giving and it is an honour to have served the public of Barbados as a psychiatrist and then consultant psychiatrist for the Barbados Psychiatric Hospital. My private practice is a continuation of my commitment to mental health wellness in Barbados.
Thankfully, the stigma attached to mental health issues is fast disappearing as Bajans acquaint themselves with the reality that illness in the mind is no different from hypertension or diabetes. That’s the reality. There is no shame in asking for help. Men and women must be committed to self care in times like this. And it is with this is in mind that I have seen and continue to see people in all professions, of all ages, all races and stations in life, coming and calling to get advice, treatment and guidance for all kinds of challenges from anxiety, depression, panic disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder to much more serious illnesses. The key is not to ignore symptoms and feelings but to address them early. My brothers are notorious for coming in at the last minute. Guys do yourself a favour, we are men, let’s talk too. My practice is confidential, completely private, just me and you.
Over the years I have provided direct clinical services such as interventions, psychiatric evaluations, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy, marriage counselling, substance abuse management, psychopharmacology, and referrals to agencies and professionals in Barbados. I have delivered training for professional and paraprofessional staff; consulted with faculty and staff at various institutions and Universities, help set up Ward C4 at the Barbados Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the psychiatric ward of the QEH.
My remit included performing outreach and I was and still am strongly involved in Mental Health Awareness activities. The health and wellness of school children, young adults and adolescents is also important to me. In addition, I have prescribed, directed, and administered psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioural disorders and collaborated with physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses and other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress. The successes are quite good in Barbados with early intervention. Like anyone else, those with not so severe mental illness and even severe mental health issues can live full, functional lives with the right treatment. So come in and talk with us or we can do a telephone consultation.
In this post-COVID reality, pre-existing mental health issues have become exacerbated as many worry about job loss or have lost jobs or seen a decrease in the need of their services. Anxiety and depression are gripping many in managerial positions, the self-employed and the unemployed of all strata of society. We cannot let our mental health deteriorate in these circumstances but should support each other and seek support at this time. The Pandemic does not of itself create a need to panic but panic and anxiety are still normal reactions.
Feel free to call me to discuss how I can help. I am still taking in-house visits. If you want to wear a mask, you may do so. All protocols set by the Ministry of Health and the WHO are respected and enforced vigorously. I will also wear a mask. If you prefer a telephone or Skype session, please call my office to arrange the same until you are comfortable enough to come to River Rd. You are safe here.
I wish you health, wellness and peace.
Dr Beresford Connell, BSc (Hons) MBBS, Dip. Psych, DM Psych.
