Everyone knows Lewis & Clark, but did you know that there was a black man who was also part of the expedition? His name was York.As William Clark''s slave from boyhood, he participated as a full member of the expedition and was present when the expedition reached the Pacific Ocean.York was known for his skill in scouting, hunting, field medicine, and manual labor in extreme weather conditions. Lewis had noted in his journal how York had saved him from certain death from a grizzly bear during the expedition. The Native Nations treated York with respect, and he played a key role in diplomatic relations, mainly due to his dark skin.After the expedition returned, every member received money and land for their services, every member except York. York asked Clark for his freedom based upon his good service during the expedition, and Clark refused. York pleaded to be reunited with his wife, who was a slave in Louisville; he even offered to work in Louisville and send Clark all his earnings. Clark still refused, and sold York to a brutal master in 1811, where he remained a slave at least until 1816. No reliable information has been published on York after that year. Today I honor York, a man history books, until recently, have forgotten.

A FLASH BLACK MOMENT IN HISTORY:In 1963, the photographer Richard Avedon took a picture of a man named William Casby.William Casby, born in 1857, was 106 years old at the time.In his hands, he was holding his great, great, granddaughter, Cherri Stamps McCray.The image is amazing because the elderly gentleman holding his descendant so tenderly, was born into slavery more than a century prior.Casby would eventually live until 1970, dying at the age of 113.
His great and great grandchildren are alive today, and many of them remember him.
It puts into perspective just how relatively recent slavery existed. Because as far away and distant as it may feel now. Even in modern-day America, there are people who have active memories of talking to former slaves

Story of a 26-year-old student who sends a message to his teacher to explain that he will be absent from the course because he has not found anyone to keep his five-month-old daughter.Nathan Alexander, 34, a math professor at Morehouse College in Atlanta responds to his student by saying:"If that''s the problem, take her to class."
Upon arriving in the classroom, the professor offered to take the child so that his student could devote himself entirely to the course.
The professor held the child throughout the lesson and even after when he answered the students questions.
