An unhealthy diet is one of the major risk factors for a range of non-communicable diseases. We have to be especially mindful of what we eat especially around the holidays. Here is a useful tip to ensure you stay healthy this season!

Reduce Salt & Increase Potassium

When preparing those amazing holiday dinners, try reducing salt intake to the recommended level of less than 5g per day, by cutting high-sodium condiments like soy sauce and bouillons. Most people consume too much sodium through salt and not enough potassium. High sodium intake and insufficient potassium can contribute to high blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Potassium can mitigate the negative effects of elevated sodium consumption on blood pressure. Try incorporating foods rich in potassium like bananas, cantaloupe, or spinach (WHO, 2020).

Use Whole Grains Instead!

The CIND Team encourages you to make the switch to whole grains. Many whole grains are naturally rich in carbohydrates which aid in the conversion of tryptophan, an amino acid, to feel-good hormones. These feel-good hormones improve your mood and also work to maintain steady sleep cycles. Try this for yourself and let us know the results!
