These are Surinam cherries, suddenly growing in our backyard garden. I Amy have seen these before in my life but it was my landlady who told me what they were called.

They get darker—dark red/purplish—and sweeter as they ripen, though are edible at these bright yellow and red (but not green as much) where they are a bit sour.

The sourness reminds my of that tar “punch” of fresh peppers, and at the red stage are nearly equal parts cherry and red pepper in taste. I figured they could be used both in sweet and savory dishes.

As I only pick a few red Surinam cherries, I decided to try them in a simple savory application, chopping them up and stirring into some brown rice (with chopped/sliced onion).

They were very bright and welcome notes mixed in among the slightly sweet and nutty brown rice, even imparting some of its flavor (and a smudge of its color) throughout the whole rice dish.

You might not have guessed it, but this is far more the type of dish I eat on the regular, humble enough not to be worthy of or necessary for public fanfare or marketing. Despite my other food-related endeavors, I am still and always a food-lover first, and as such don’t mind sharing a new (for me) food discovery—one that I look forward to experimenting with, both savory and sweet, in the future.
