DO YOU KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF COLORECTAL CANCER (CRC)?

The first thing to note is that CRC may have NO symptoms! By the time patients exhibit symptoms, the cancer is usually quite advanced and may have already spread to other organs.

When symptoms occur, they include:
1. A change in bowel habits - typically changes in stool frequency or size of stools
2. Presence of blood in the stools
3. Unexplained weight loss

So, don't wait! Get screened for CRC today! Talk to your friendly, neighbourhood doctor about screening options!

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

What is Colorectal Cancer (CRC)?

CRC is a cancer involving the colon or the re**um. It is the SECOND leading cause of cancer death in Barbados in both men and women!

However, regular screening can prevent CRC and save lives! Screening should begin at age 50 years, or age 45 years, in people with higher risk of developing CRC, like Afro-Caribbean persons. Regular screening should then continue until age 75 years, in those who are average-risk for CRC.

This month, we'll learn more about CRC and how to screen for it, because screening saves lives!
