👩🏻⚕️FAST FACTS ON AIRBORNE DISEASES
Because of multiple posts circulating today on social media about “new” airborne virus, here are some basic info to shed some light on the unnecessary scare its causing.
As of the moment, there is no documented “new virus” (inhale, exhale and stop the hype of scaring others😉 ). These diseases (being posted with pictures of rash and all) are, in fact, very familiar to us.
🌬Airborne diseases are those that are spread by tiny pathogens in the air which can be bacterial, fungal or viral.
Particles that cause airborne diseases are small enough to cling to the air. They hang on dust particles, moisture droplets until they are picked up or inhaled. They are also acquired thru contact with body fluids, such as mucus or phlegm. Once the pathogens are inside the body, they multiply until someone has the disease.
🤒 Common airborne diseases include:
INFLUENZA (“Trangkaso”) : The seasonal "flu" virus spreads easily from person to person. There are many strains of flu, and it continually changes to adapt to our immune system hence, the advent of annual flu vaccination.
COMMON COLD: This is usually caused by a rhinovirus. There are many rhinoviruses, and the strains change to make it easier to infect humans (so, hold on to our daily doses of Vitamin C 😉).
VARICELLA (Chicken Pox or “Bulutong”): This spreads easily among young children. The rash is typically widespread on the body and made up of small red spots that turn into itchy blisters, which scab over time. Chickenpox spread for about 48 hours before rash shows. It usually spreads through the air or by touching the vesicular rash.
MUMPS (“Beke”) : This virus affect the glands just below the ears, causing swelling and, in some cases, leads to hearing loss. Vaccination is considered important to prevent this.
MEASLES (“Tigdas”) : This is caused by contact with a person who has the measles virus, or by inhaling particles from their sneezes or cough. As with mumps & varicella, vaccination is essential for preventing the spread of this disease.
WHOOPING COUGH (Pertussis): This is a contagious bacterial infection that causes the airways to swell. The hacking cough is persistent and generally treated with antibiotics early on to prevent damage. This is vaccine preventable as well (as part of DPT vaccine)
Other airborne diseases include:
TB or Tuberculosis, Anthrax; Diphtheria, Meningitis.
PREVENTION
💦Hygiene, regular handwashing and other good sanitary habits will help prevent the spread of airborne diseases.
🍽 Eating nutritious food to boost the immune system and keeping yourself well-hydrated.
😷Wearing surgical mask in public places, and covering when sneezing and coughing (with your elbow or using tissue).
💉 VACCINATION- provides immunoprotection and lessens the possibility of getting infected or even if one gets infected despite receiving the vaccine, the risk of severity is greatly reduced.
🏡Proper ventilation- because in an unventilated area, pathogens, pollutants, and moisture can build up to unsafe levels.
⏺ SYMPTOMS
Many airborne diseases have symptoms similar to the common cold or influenza. These include:
fever, cough; chills; muscle and body aches; fatigue; nasal congestion; sneezing; runny or stuffy nose; sore throat; headache, etc
🏥TREATMENT
For most airborne diseases, you’ll need plenty of rest and fluids. Further treatment depends on your specific illness, hence, seek consult to the nearest doctor in your area (not Dr. Google, alright?😉)
Some airborne diseases, such as chickenpox and flu do not need treatment. However, medications and other supportive care can help relieve symptoms.
Treatment for infants with whooping cough can include antibiotics, and hospitalization is often needed.
Symptoms of the common cold can be treated, but the illness tends to go away even without treatment. Flu runs its course over a few days before someone starts to recover. In the case of chickenpox, the immune system usually deals with the virus on its own.
While airborne diseases are common, serious COMPLICATIONS are rare but CAN HAPPEN anytime, hence warrant immediate consult. Timely vaccinations reduce the risk, substantially.
In the end, it all boils down to our fave tagline-
“Love 👨👩👧👦 Protect 🏡 Vaccinate 💉”
Keep safe, everyone ☺️
