“When Survival Meets Skill – The Legendary Self-Surgery”
Scientific Comment:
In 1961, Soviet surgeon Dr. Leonid Rogozov performed a self-appendectomy while stationed at an Antarctic research base, with no other doctors present. Using local anesthesia, a mirror, and sheer determination, he made history in one of the most remarkable examples of surgical self-reliance. This case underscores the importance of clinical knowledge, composure under pressure, and the human body’s resilience. It is now studied in medical ethics, emergency surgery, and extreme condition medicine.
