As part of the ongoing response to the measles situation in Bangladesh, targeted vaccination activities are being implemented in high-risk areas, including Gazipur Sadar Upazila, to protect children and reduce transmission.

The initiative is being carried out by the Government of Bangladesh with support from World Health Organization Bangladesh, UNICEF Bangladesh, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, reinforcing a coordinated effort to expand immunization coverage.

The programme was inaugurated at Mirzapur Union Parishad by Dr MA Muhit, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare, who emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left unprotected.

Speaking at the event, Dr Rajesh Narwal, Deputy WHO Representative to Bangladesh, expressed his gratitude to the MoHFW, DGHS, EPI, and all health teams in Gazipur for their tireless efforts in organizing this important campaign. He assured that the WHO team remains fully committed to supporting the Government and partners in this measles response. “Together, with strong leadership, dedicated health workers, engaged communities, and committed partners—we can ensure that every eligible child receives the measles–rubella vaccine, and contribute towards building a healthier, more resilient Bangladesh.” He added

With vaccination already underway in 30 high risk upazilas across 18 districts and further expansion planned, these efforts highlight the critical importance of timely immunization in preventing measles and safeguarding communities.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to ensure that all children aged 6 months to under 5 years receive the measles–rubella vaccine to help protect every child and community.

A significant step towards climate-resilient health systems in Bangladesh

The Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP) 2026 was nationally disseminated on 31 March 2026 in Dhaka, led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Md. Khorshed Alam, NDC, Additional Secretary, Health Services Division (HSD), MoHFW, graced the event as the Chief Guest, alongside several senior government officials. Dr. Rajesh Narwal, Deputy WHO Representative to Bangladesh, attended the event as the Special Guest.

In his remarks, Dr. Narwal highlighted that while Bangladesh’s climate leadership is widely recognized, countries contributing the least to climate change often face the greatest health impacts. He reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in operationalizing HNAP through technical guidance, capacity building, strengthening climate–health intelligence, and facilitating access to climate financing.

The event brought together government officials, development partners, civil society, academia, and the private sector to strengthen collective action on climate and health. Discussions emphasized the importance of large-scale implementation and adopting a whole-of-society approach.
