Brave & Safe is a movement to spark conversations about Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).

The brutal r**e of eight-year-old Asiya forces us to ask: What kind of society allows such horror to happen? How could anyone commit such an inhumane act against a child?

In Bangladesh, comprehensive s*x education is almost nonexistent. Conversations about consent, safe and unsafe touch, and bodily autonomy remain taboo both at home and in schools. In this silence, harm festers. And in this silence, another child’s future is stolen.

Now is the time to break this silence. Justice must be swift for rapists, but punishment alone is not enough. We must tackle the root of the problem starting with education. Every child must be taught the right to their own body. Every child must learn that no one has the right to violate them or anyone else.

Brave & Safe stands against this violence. We demand justice for Asiya. And we demand action because silence is complicity.

Primarily due to the lack of healthcare workers, there is a significant lack of SRH awareness in Bangladeshi rural areas. As stated by an article by Dhaka Tribune.

As a consequence, women resort to underground and unsafe abortion and more than half of the girls experience their first period without knowing anything about menstrual hygiene. This results in diseases such as urinary tract infections and brown discharge.

We must have sufficient number of frontline workers to disseminate information about SRH and create a safer world for all.

According to Plan International, everyday, approximately 33,000 girls across the globe are forced into child marriage.

As a consequence, they give birth at a very young age and experiences s*xual violence.

By educating children about SRH, we can empower them to be brave and ensure their own safety. 🙌

In 2017, Angelina Jolie delivered a powerful speech at the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference. She addressed s*xual violence as a weapon and “a critical obstacle to achieving women’s equality and our full human rights.”

For a world to be considered safer, s*xual violence must be universally recognized as a criminal act and met with immediate punishment.

No, they are not. According to a report, boys suffered more s*xual abuse in 2022 compared to 2021. While it is no surprise that females of all ages are subjected to exploitation, males are not safe either.

As we promote s*xual and reproductive health (SRH), we also have to take the boys into account.

Brave & Safe recently conducted a session on preventing child abuse at স্নেহের ছায়া পাঠশালা. Through art and engaging activities, we educated a cohort of wonderful children about protecting themselves.

With child abuse being a persistent issue in both Bangladesh and globally, we must strive to empower our children and create an environment, where they feel safe.

When your child is little, make sure to tell them the names of their body parts. This way, if something feels wrong or hurts, they can tell you more easily. 🙌

From an early age, teach your child about:

🚫 Establishing boundaries
✋ Good touch vs bad touch
💙 Creating a safe zone

Educate them that no one has the right to make them feel uncomfortable.

Economic, cultural, and social constraints already limit access to SRH services for women. When climate disasters occur, such constraints are further worsened.
