We Remember you on your 5th Death Anniversary. Late Abdul Mannan Sir, whatever we are today, is because of you.
Late Abdul Mannan (1942-2020), born in the village of Gobindapur, Upazila Nawabganj, District Dhaka, obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Dhaka University and fellowship (FCMA) from the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants in London, UK. Since then, he is a prolific Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). While studying in the South West College of Commerce in London, he excelled in all his examinations as the college topper.
He was the Founder Chairman of Bengal Airlift Group and Managing Director of A.R Chowdhury Securities Ltd. His engagement in social service made him the District Governor of Rotary International District 3280 (Bangladesh) in 1989-90. He was the Chairman of Pacific Asia Travels Association (PATA), Bangladesh Chapter from 1997-2013 and the former president of South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) for the year 2012-13. He was an Associate Member of Wilton Park, Wiston House, Sussex, UK.
He was elected as the Member of Parliament from Nawabgonj Upazila, JS- 181-Dhaka-2 for four consecutive terms during 5th to 8th Parliamentary session and served as a State Minister with the charge of Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism along with the Ministry of Textile during the year 1991 to 1996. Earlier, from 1978 to 1981 he had also served as the Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
He had served as Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committees in Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Agriculture. He has also been the Member of Public Accounts Committee and Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure.
With a wide parliamentary knowledge and experience, he published his first book, ‘Parliament and I’ in the Ekushey Book Fair- 2009. In the same year in December, his second book ‘Laws, Unlaws, Above- Laws, Outlaws and In-Laws’ and the third one ‘How precious is an Oath?’ was published. The fourth book ‘Bengal, Thy Name is Beauty’ A Translated Version of Rupasse Bangla of Jibanananda Das, was published in 2021. Even though it was scripted during his lifetime, it was published after his demise with the great effort of his only daughter barrister Mehnaz Mannan.
He was married to (late) Nilufar Mannan. They have their only daughter Barrister Mehnaz Mannan, son in-law Barrister Nasir Uddin Ahmed (Ashim), granddaughter Ahreen Ahmed, grandson Areez Ahmed and his only brother A Quadir who lives in London with his wife and two daughters.
