🟡 Why Use a Stone Extraction Balloon in ERCP?

1. Non-Surgical Stone Removal :

>It allows removal of bile duct stones without surgery, reducing patient trauma and recovery time.

2. Safe Dilatation of the Duct :

>The balloon can dilate the sphincter of Oddi or the bile duct gently before stone removal, reducing the risk of perforation or tearing.

3. Effective Stone Sweeping:

>After dilation or sphincterotomy, the inflated balloon is swept through the duct, pushing stones toward the duodenum for extraction.

4.Multiple Sizes for Different Stones/Ducts

>Balloons come in sizes like 8.5mm, 12mm, 15mm, etc., allowing flexibility depending on the size of the duct and stone.

5. Radiopaque Marker for Precision:

>Many balloons have markers visible under fluoroscopy, so doctors can position them precisely during the procedure.

🔧 How It's Used (Procedure Steps)
1. Guidewire Insertion: A guidewire is inserted through the papilla into the bile duct.
2.Balloon Catheter Advancement: The stone balloon catheter is advanced over the wire into position beyond the stone.
3. Balloon Inflation: The balloon is inflated (usually with contrast) to the desired diameter.
4. Stone Extraction: The inflated balloon is pulled backward, sweeping the stone(s) out into the duodenum.
5. Repeat as Needed: This process may be repeated several times to clear all stones.
