Strengthening Livelihood Opportunities for Transgender Communities at the Action Lab in Kolkata, India through a Tailoring Skills Initiative

The CIRDAP–NIRD&PR project, “Action Lab for the Inclusion of Transgender and Gender-Variant Youth in Mainstream Livelihoods,” is in its final phase in India. The initiative focuses on identifying livelihood opportunities for transgender individuals and providing continuous mentoring to support transgender-led enterprises. Through research, field engagement, and skill development, the project aims to expand economic opportunities for communities that have long faced social and financial exclusion.

As part of the project’s capacity-building efforts, a Tailoring and Sewing Training Programme has been launched in West Bengal in collaboration with USHA International. This training equips transgender participants with practical sewing skills to support independent income generation, formal employment, and entrepreneurship in the apparel sector.

The programme aims to strengthen employable skills while fostering confidence, dignity, and self-reliance. With a blend of theory and hands-on practice, participants gain market-ready skills that contribute to sustainable livelihood development.
