The Dräger Atlan A100 / A100-XL is a modern anaesthesia workstation / breathing-system + ventilator platform designed to be safe, versatile, and efficient. It’s meant for OR use (and supports neonates → adults) with integrated ventilation, gas mixing, monitoring, etc.
Key points of this Machine :
1. Piston Ventilation & Fresh-Gas Decoupling
Uses an electronically driven piston ventilator (E-Vent), which is more precise especially for low tidal volumes, and provides better control even with very small VTs.
Fresh-gas decoupling ensures that changes in fresh gas flows don’t mess up the delivered volume/pressure. This helps maintain stable ventilation even when flow settings change.
2. Low- and Minimal-Flow Anaesthesia with Cost and Environmental Efficiency
The system supports low/minimal fresh-gas flow, integrated warming of breathing system helps reduce condensation (so less waste), efficient gas usage.

3. Flexibility / Scalability & Customisation
Available in two trolley sizes (compact and large) (A100 vs A100 XL) to adapt to space constraints.

Tailorable user interface; consistent Dräger UI + operating principles reduce the learning curve.
4. Patient Safety & Lung Protective Ventilation
High accuracy even for small tidal volumes; supports adults, paediatrics, neonates.
PEEP maintained even if small leak or during spontaneous breathing; trigger sensitivity is high to detect weak spontaneous effort.
AutoFlow feature to deliver set tidal volume with minimum necessary pressure to avoid overpressure or barotrauma.
5. Hygiene / Infection Control Oriented Design
Breathing system components designed for tool-free disassembly, few parts, many autoclavable or reusable, smooth & rounded external surfaces for cleaning.
Cable channels, minimized clutter so fewer crevices where pathogens accumulate.
6. Connectivity, Digital Support, and Workflow Efficiency
Integration with Dräger Connect and hospital IT systems (HIS, EMR) for data, remote monitoring and maintenance; self-tests, remote diagnostics.
Intuitive workflow features: graphical walkthrough pre-test checklist, automatic self-test, alarm-cause-remedy help functions.
7. Backup / Safety Modes
Backup manual mode in case ventilator / touchscreen / gas mixer fails; ability to continue fresh gas & anaesthetic agent delivery even when machine is off or power supply issues.
In case of central gas supply failure / missing/empty gas cylinders, mechanical ventilation continues with ambient air.

Considerations / Possible Limitations:
As with any high-function workstation, complexity may require training and ongoing support.
To get full functionality (monitor-integration, software options, digital services) hospital IT infrastructure and accessories must be compatible.
Low flow and small volume settings demand accurate calibration/maintenance to ensure performance (gas sensors, valves etc.).
